Parenting after a Loss

Breaking the constipation cycle ?

Good morning ladies!  We're in a viscious constipation battle with Mallory.  She's only going once a week and it's clearly bothering her because sometimes she arches and grunts.  A couple of weeks ago we hit 6 days with no poo and she finally was able to go after alot of grunting.  Then we went 7 days and she was miserable and we had to give her a suppository.  That was Saturday.  Now it's Tuesday and we're starting the same trend all over again.  I have to assume at some point her body gets used to the solids and figures this out?  We can't "help" her (suppository) each week.  Is this cycle normal?  How long until it sort of fixes itself?

I don't expect her to go daily anymore but I also hate to see her getting upset and be in pain each week.  She's having prunes the past couple of days and we've tried juice but she never really drinks much of that.  Help!

  • Sara went through this for about a month- going 6 to 8 days. We had to help her everytime. Over the past week she has started going every other day on her own, but you can tell the poo is a lot thicker. I think it comes wih solids and she will eventually "learn" to go again. Good luck I know its rough!

  • What other foods are you feeding her?  I know bananas can cause constipation and I think apple sauce can too.

Are you putting the juice in a bottle or a sippy cup?  If I really need DD to drink it, I will put it in a bottle.  Pear juice works great.

  • Have the prunes helped at all?  What does Mallory eat?  I find that DD gets constipated really quick on rice and bananas, so I try to balance that out with applesauce and pears during the day (she also gets sweet potatoes and carrots), and she still poops every day.  When I start to get little pellets, I know it's time for applesauce.
  • What is Mal eating? I'd cut out all of the constipating foods for a few weeks and see if that helps. Slowly reintroduce things that are binding (rice, bananas, etc.) Also, have you tried putting 1oz of prune juice in her bottles with her formula a few times per day? That will get her to drink it and should help with constipation. Another option is to ask about benefiber. See if your pedi says it's okay first but a tsp in one bottle will probably do the trick.

She's never had bananas.  She's had apples in the past week.  Also in the past few weeks she's tried carrots, sweet potatoes, prunes.

I always give her the juice in her bottle.  She doesn't seem interested...

She eats oatmeal...but hasn't had rice since she was about 4 months.  She has never had bananas. I'm too worried they'll back her up.  She's BF but I guess I can add the prune juice to those bottles?  I will call the pedi for sure and see what they think about the benefiber.

Sara has been eating solids longer then Mal since we took a break during her reflux and RSV.  Maybe she's just getting used to it the way Sara did.  Did you ever mention it to her pedi?

  • DD isn't on solids yet, but was (and still kind of is) having pooping issues.  We tried prune juice, and pear juice.  Pear juice worked once, but then it just cramped her up.  We finally were told to put 2tsp of Karo Syrup in a bottle, so we did this once a night until she went (only took 2 nights) she now seems to be going a little more regulalry.  When she's gone 4-5 days wihtout going and is starting to show signs of being uncomfortable I put the syrup back in her bottle and she goes the next day no problem.  Maybe give it a try?

  • Def. mix the juice or syrup or benefiber or whatever in with your BM. It will help her drink it. I'm sorry that she's having problems. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Yes she said it wasn't abnormal to go through that. We tried prunes, juice, but the only way we got it out was with suppositries. She is on oatmeal too and one day boom she just started pooping again! It was torture for a few weeks though
  • Avery was having issues too after starting solids. My pedi's nurse  said to incorporate juice into her diet. I give her some pear juice every day. Usually about an ounce and 1/2 of juice and water! HTH! We seem to be doing ok so far!

We had this problem when I stopped BF'ing and went to FF.  We used Karo Syrup in her bottles to help her get regular again. (per pedis recommendation)

"P" foods help them go.  Pears, Peaches, Prunes, Apple Juice (not sauce)  When DD eats Pears or Peaches she goes 2x day.

  • We are on a constant poop watch with Layne because she gets constipated very easily. Essentially our pedi started us on prune and pear juice, which didn't work. Then they had us start giving her baby food prunes-everyday. We were mixing it with oatmeal but the poop was still like clay. No we just do prunes, pears, peaches, plums etc (The "P"'s). Apple juice is okay but applesauces is not. We were told to never do the rice cereal because it's binding as are banana's, applesauce etc. Good luck!!
