Knitters: Help please!

I'm working on a pair of sheepy pants medium longies that are supposed to have a 16-18" hip.  The waist (measured on the cable portion of the needles) is 10, maybe 11".  Do I need to frog AGAIN?  DS' waist is 15"...it stretches to that but I don't know that he'd have much longer to wear them then.  My gauge is 5.5 sts instead of the 5 it was last time I started...how the heck am I supposed to get it right with it constantly changing?

I guess I'm wondering if starting on the body will stretch it out more or if I'm screwed...I'm halfway done with the ribbing and don't have time for this sh!t!

Re: Knitters: Help please!

  • I'm still not great with adjusting for gauge and such, however when I made a sheepy soaker for DD I was worried the waist wasn't going to be big enough and that I had the gauge off.  However when I put them on the bigger needles for the hips the gauge was right maybe that is because stitches  are added in the last row before going to the larger needles.

I figured I shouldn't panic and just keep going to see how it turns out (It was my first one) and the waist stretched just fine and the soaker fit her perfect.  I did the small size which was a 14-16" hip and she was 14.5".  I'm not sure what it was measuring on the needles but it looked really small.

I don't know if this helpful, because it was my first one I figured I should see how it went first.  As I know things always look smaller on needle and I didn't want the waist to be to big on the needle and have no stretch to it.

    Good Luck

Thanks!  I compared it to the NB longies waistband that I had made (and had not frogged yet) and they were identical, so I frogged and restarted based on my new gauge.  Much better now.  I'd rather them be too big than too small!
