Eco-Friendly Family

Ok, I need some advice about making detergent please!

I posted last week here (https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/33837003.aspx)  that I was looking for inexpensive baby shower gift ideas for 5 friends that went along with making wool dryer balls.  Got some great ideas and was linked to here (https://www.theecofriendlyfamily.com/2009/08/cloth-diaper-detergent.html) for a detergent recipe.  Thought it was a great idea, found the stuff at local stores after a bunch of calls but then I looked into it and that's the diaper detergent recipe, not a regular clothing one.  So then I found the regular recipe (https://www.theecofriendlyfamily.com/2009/08/laundry-detergent.html) and I have a few issues.  #1 it looks like it would be $60- $70 bucks for the big batch and well, it would be cheaper and easier to get them bottles of Planet or something.  #2 I found some stuff online about the borax and washing soda being not so good for babies skin so I wouldn't want to make them special detergent for their babies that would hurt their skin!

So, is the original CD detergent recipe better for newborns clothing?  And if not, any other ideas for a inexpensive DIY thing to go with dryer balls to make it a nice baby shower gift?

TIA!!!

  • You can use the CD for baby clothes as well.  Also, the clothes are rinsed so you don't have to worry about the chemicals on the skin.  Also, you can make a much smaller batch and it is far less expensive.

Ok, thanks, that helps.  Will the CD recipe get them clean enough?

As far as the batch size I'm making gifts for 5 baby shower right now (crazy, I know but it's the same friend group) so the big batch is great.  It was just the cost of the regular detergent big batch that was more than I was hoping to spend.  The CD detergent big batch I've priced at $30.

  • I use the cd detergent for all our clothes. I just use 4 T or 1/4 C for our regular loads. Everything comes out very clean, diapers and clothes. My husband is a postal carrier and even his uniforms are always clean. I've never heard of anyone having an issue with sensitivity from this detergent either and a lot of us on here use it. I have heard of several people having issues in one form or another with Planet though.
