is this colic?

or "just gas"?

c has major problems in the evening getting gas out. between 8:30 and 9 he starts fussing, grunting then it turns into screaming and crying. we try burping and cycling his legs, etc and it helps a little. he grunts and fusses all.night.long. he seems okay during the day, but all night he seems to really suffer from gas/tummy trouble. this has been going on for probably 5 days.

i've ordered some gripe water to try. mylicon which we had on hand has helped a little but it's short-lived.

he has very little spitting up so i don't think it's reflux but i'm not sure.

Any advice, words of wisdom, or miracle cures? D is an early bird with only one nap during the day, so I'm so sleepy!!!

Re: is this colic?

  • It could be either.  I know that's really helpful, right? lol  Our pedi. dx's colic by process of elimination.  We did a full elimination diet, OTC & RX meds.  When those didn't help, we got the colic label.

Hopefully the gripe water will help some.  It helped DD.  It didn't "fix" the colic, but it helped keep her in the moderately grumpy level instead of the screaming until choking level.  If it is colic, wearing them can help, too.  I would wear her and sway with her, bounce on the exercise ball, etc.  And showers.  Really hard running water.

GL!  I hope it's just gas and easily fixable gas, at that!

  • They say for it to be colic they cannot find anything else wrong they have to cry for at least 3 hours in a row a day at least 3x a week for at least 3 weeks. I think that is what I read when I was reading up on it.  It also usually happens around the same time everyday.

DD almost had it but it didn't last for 3 weeks we did have many days that were really hard.  It helped to put her in the carrier and I would bounce on the exercise ball with her.  She also slept in her swing when that worked.  I would sleep in the living room with her when she was in the swing.  She usually started crying at around 8 or 9 pm and would usually stop around 12 or 1 am.

I hope it gets better and you can get some sleep.
