I like Ella May. DH and I have considered adding that name to our list. My opinion is Ella goes best with a MN that begins with a strong consonant and does not end in an "Elle" or soft "A" sound.
Ella Grace is another option (although Grace is becoming a go-to MN it seems). Ditto Ella Marie.
I agree, probably something that doesn't start with an E or end in an A, mn like
Grace, Rose etc. are really common, what about Juliet, Madeline,
Sophie, Charlotte... I like mn with more syllables but our last name is only one syllable so i guess it would depend on what flows well with your last name as well.

Ella is just one of those names that doesn't go with just any middle name!
