basil seeds?

so i harvested seeds from my basil plant last year and figured i would start some from seed this year and keep myself from having to buy plants again this year.

i planted them in started pods and they have been sitting in the sun room (in the sunniest/warmest) spot in the house. but still no plants or sprouts have shown up.

how long does it usually take to go from seed to seed-ling?

TIA

Re: basil seeds?

  • I'm not sure if the germination time, you could probably find it by googling, or someone else might know. I planted basil by seed a couple years ago (just straight into the ground) and they didn't come up for quite a while and were still tiny even by the end of the summer. Don't think I got to harvest any. Your seeds might need to have a light directly on them in order to get them to grow properly. Basil needs a LOT of sun.

  • google says 5-7 days but its been at least a week (if not 2). maybe i'll move them under my desk lamp and leave it on (that bugger gets really hot).

thankfully we are still in "frost" season here (expected snow today but didn't get any) so i'm not in a hurry, more of an experiment than anything. but i'm worried about wasting the container/seeds/starting soil just by rotting seeds in it for a month. :(

  • We grow basil from seed all the time and ti grows pretty fast.  Make sure it is in a sunny room.  If you don't see plants soon you may have problem with your seeds.  How did you store them?  If you stored them in an air tight container you may have killed them.  I usually buy a package at the store for under $2.00.  I have never tried using seeds from a plant I already had.

an air tight container kills them??? oh no. ok. well then i probably killed them (i put them in a left over take and toss container with a sealed lid) guess i'll be hitting the nursery for some seeds ::pout::
