GD question about alcohol wipes...

Can using alcohol wipes on your finger before you test affect your number? Yesterday when I did my 2 hour after lunch test, I got 89. Then, maybe... 30 minutes later they did it again at my OB appt, and the nurse used an alcohol wipe. The number was 103. Then today I used a wipe because I was at work and couldn't get up to wash my hands, and my after breakfast number was 127, which is my highest number since starting testing yesterday. I think I still would've been elevated but I wonder if the alcohol wipe can maybe make it higher?

  • Yes, it can spike your number if you prick yourself when the skin is still damp.  It is a pain but plain old soap and water is best.  I use a wipe when on the go and wait for a bit before I test after cleaning the area.  Same with hand lotion or hand sanitizer.

  • Well that makes me feel somewhat better about my not great number! I'm still pretty sure I had too much cereal though.. :)

  • I am under the impression that an alcohol wipe is just fine but that you MUST let it dry (or use a clean cloth etc to dry it off).  I haven't noticed a difference between that (as long as it is dry) and soap and water.

  • Ditto let it dry.  I also use the gauze I am going to use to stop the bleeding on my finger and gently wipe my finger after I use the wipe but before I stick myself.
  • I was told no they are not ok. It's best just to wash your hands with soap and water.
