We go in Monday at 10:45 for his well baby check, but I'm not sure if I should call before then.
I got out Will's baby book to add his most recent weight and was looking back over them...This is what he's weighed since 7 mos:
7 months: 19 lbs. 10 oz.
8 months: 19 lbs. 13 oz.
9 months: 19 lbs. 10 oz.
11 1/2 months (last Fri): 20 lbs. 2 oz.
So in 4 months he's gained 1/2 pound. I'm kind of freaking out over here a lot. The kid will not eat anything high-calorie (he sticks to fruit/breads for the most part, occasionally he'll eat a veggie or some meat) and he still isn't crazy about milk. If I'm lucky, I can get him to drink 1/2 a sippy of milk a day. He's still nursing, but I have no idea how much he's getting from that. He gets breakfast (fruit + waffle or bagle w/ cream cheese or cheerios or eggs), snack (string cheese or bunny crackers), lunch (pasta or grilled cheese + yogurt + cottage cheese + fruit + maaaybe a veggie), snack (snack bar or fruit), and dinner (whatever we're eating + fruit + veggie). I'm seriously at a loss as to how to get him to eat anymore. He is moving constantly. From the second he wakes up until he crashes, he's walking or crawling or climbing on something.
He doesn't act sickly or anything - he's hyper, happy, meeting milestones, etc. He's just skinny as heck. Do you think I need to call tomorrow and see if there's anything we can do to help him? My mom thinks I should just call and see, but I'm pretty sure they're just going to tell me to wait until Monday to discuss with Dr. Travis. Any ideas on how to get him to drink more milk/eat more calories?
Ugghhhh. I hate weight issues. They're going to turn me pyschotic.
Re: Would you call pedi?
I wouldn't call or go in before your well check unless he starts acting oddly.
M&M has this high-cal pudding concotion that she fed Miss H to help her gain weight. Maybe get that recipe from her? They go to the Changinator, so I'm guessing Dr. Travis would be down with trying something like that to pack on the pounds.
Good luck! I hope he starts gaining weight--for both your sake!
I've heard that kids who have problems gaining weight need to have fattier foods. But if he's not wanting that, they say they have to cook their baby's foods in oil and butter, basically adding fat where the kid won't turn down the food b/c it's essentially the same. Does that make sense?
I'd wait and see. I'm sure he's fine, just burning off a lot of calories a day. He's working hard! I weigh my boys every now and then and even though they seem taller and bigger, they don't weigh too much more than they did at 9 months.
I'd wait till Monday. No need to call tomorrow. 20 lbs is a healthy weight for a 12 month old, so I'd bet $100 the doctor will tell you he's fine
Similar experiences....my kids gained weight the most rapidly their first 9 months. After that, it really levels off. As they start crawling and walking, they just burn so many calories. I think its perfectly normal. Now, my friend just took her DD in and she weighs 18 lbs at 19 months old. That's something to worry about.
My nephew has always been a small kid, too. Doc told my sister to give him milkshakes
He's not walking on his own yet, but he walks everywhere with his walker. I'm totally serious - aside from naps, from 7am to 7pm, he doesn't slow down!
joyco - I'll have to do more of that. Most of his foods are raw or steamed...I'm sure he wouldn't mind the butter, though! One of my main concerns is making sure the weight he does gain is "healthy" weight...if that makes sense. I reeaaallly don't want to go giving him cheese puffs and things with a high saturated fat content but more foods like avocados and the like. Though he won't touch avocados with a 10 ft. pole...stinker.
He loves vanilla milk, but I can only find it in 2%. Do you know if they make whole vanilla milk? We haven't tried chocolate yet...I think I'm going to have to give up some more of my "I'll nevers" with him and his weight issues! ha - I've been so adament on not giving him anything other than white milk and water to drink. I really don't want him hopped up on sugar all the time...but I guess I'd rather him be healthy and gaining weight.
I know, I was the same way. I use the Nestle Nesquik chocolate syrup. It is the yellow bottle with blue cap. It doesn't have to be refrigerated and I only put just a very little bit in his cup. It actually has very few sugar grams in it. I mix it with his milk. Try that if you want. I know Austin just never liked regular white milk.
I also give him apple juice. I put half 100% juice and half water. He doesn't like fruit, so at least he is getting his vitamin C that way! ;-)
