Austin Babies

please help me before I go insane and possibly scare the neighbours

the boys have decided to drop their 2nd nap.  they've done this for the whole week (since Monday, I guess, although they were doing it some last week too).  I tried to push their first nap to later today (instead of 10:30, I pushed it to 12:30) to see if they would sleep longer and get all the sleep in that they still need and yeah, that was a bust.  They slept for about 45 minutes (when they usually sleep an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon) total.  That's all they've slept today.

We also have been trying to do the straw cup of milk in place of their 3rd bottle (they had been having 4 bottles throughout the day and I figured I ought to drop one and substitute it w/ whole milk-actually, soy b/c of Spencer's "allergy").  They don't want anything to do with it.  Cooper actually even pushes the thing away.  Their straw cups w/ water though?  They LOVE it.  Can't get enough of it.

Do you think the dropped nap and introduction of whole milk (started last Friday) is a coincidence or one is b/c of the other?  I'm feeding them like they're human garbage disposals, so I know they're getting plenty to eat.  WHAT am I doing wrong?!?!  Is there a book that will help me?  Anything??

HELP ME.  Tell me exactly what I should do b/c I am at my flippin' wit's end.  I just want to scream and curse all day long b/c I am so frustrated and angry at what has happened to my sweet little boys.  They used to be so good and now everything has just gone to hell!  :(

  • Oh yeah.  We had a rough couple weeks when Layna went down to one nap around 12-13 months old.  I felt like a real jerk, because I had just told someone on here that 12 months was too young to drop to one nap.  Apparently, my firstborn was just a dreamchild because he took naps until he was 6 years old.

I think you pushed the nap too late today.  Try to push it back gradually.  Try 11 am tomorrow.

I think the nap and milk thing is a coincindence.  Just things that happen as they near 12 months old.  Fun times!

Did you ever confirm that Spencer is allergic?  Did you ask the doctor?

  • I'm not any help with the nap thing but I'm freaking out a little about weaning from the bottle and switching to milk. DD hates milk..she takes a sip, opens her mouth, and lets it all run out all down her chin. I've tried every day for a week and she doesn't like it. She does well with a sippy cup now but sometimes she wants a bottle instead (she asks for a baba and pushes/throws the sippy cup away).

Anyway, I feel some of your pain. Hopefully the nap thing is just a fluke.
  • I agree 12:30 might be too late. 11 or 11:30 might be better. About the milk, maybe they don't like the taste of it? Will they drink it out of the bottle but not the straw cup? If they drink it out of the bottle try a sippy cup that has a more bottle feel to it.
  • We are going through something similar right now.  E's naps are all over the place, sometimes an hour, sometimes 20 minutes, and he often fights his second one really badly and then sleeps for 20 minutes..  Yesterday, I did the same thing as you and tried to move his first nap later.  Did not work at all, he slept less than 30 minutes.  Today, he went back to sleeping at 10 and at 1:30, both for an hour.  I have no idea what's up with that kid.  I think tomorrow I'll try his second nap a little later because I think he's often not tired enough when I put him down, so he fights it.  Who knows.

As for milk, we just tried it today in a straw cup.  He drank it, but I don't think he's ready to give up his bottles.  He still downs them and cries fiercely when he wants them.  We'll have to see how it goes.

I totally feel you on "what happened to my sweet little boy?"  E has been sooooo whiny lately and so demanding and I'm starting to go a little nuts.  The only thing that makes him consistently happy is being outside.

  • I cannot answer naps because I am still pushing two naps on my guys. Most days they spend their second nap just resting in their cribs but not actually sleeping. I will tell you about us dropping bottles though. I started with putting milk in their sippy cups since they were awesome drinking juice out of it. They would not touch the milk. So I introduced the straw cups and they would drink the milk out of there. So even now we still use sippy cups for juice or water and straw cups for milk. So you might consider getting a different cup. I think sometimes they get confused when the stuff inside is different. I also never mixed milk and formula. As far as dropping bottles, I started with the lunch. I figured if they did not drink much milk that the food would make up for it. Then breakfast and then the 3 bottle. I have not dropped bedtime yet! I am hoping to do it this weekend. Luckily it has gone pretty well once I got the cup situation figured out. I think in due time they will drink everything from a straw! At least I hope. Having two... Well 4 cups a day is a pain. But it is working. And my pedi said only 12-16 ounces a day of milk. Good luck!

  • Joyco, I am right there with you. DS has decided that he wanted to drop a nap also so I pushed his morning nap back. He will not take a nap before 1pm and he wakes up at 6:30am. Well, his one nap is lasting 20-45 minutes! I am going crazy too! When he took two naps a day they were 45 min-1 1/2 hours each.  Everyone told me "wait till he goes down till one nap a day. It'll be one loooooooooooong nap." Nope, not my kid!

Do you want to come over and just get drunk with me while our kids are miserable and not sleeping? haha!

  • K's been trying to drop her evening nap for a few weeks. I talked with my pedi and she confirmed that most babies drop to 1 nap between 12-14 months. She suggested pushing the nap out in 15 minute increments, first 1-3 days, 15 minutes later, 4-6 days 30 minutes, etc. She also suggested bumping up lunch or offering a protien filled snack about 20 minutes prior to nap so that K is not waking because she is hungry. K has taken 1 nap per day this week lasting anywhere from 1.5 - 2 hours. I'm hoping that she will move towards a consistent 2.5 - 3 hour nap soon.

That is so good to hear.  I thought it was just my kid too, and DH thinks I'm spoiling him.  ::off to tell DH to suck it::
