Babies: 0 - 3 Months

?'s for Reflux moms

I have a 6 week old son and lately he has been showing the signs of reflux, so we are taking him in to the pediatrician tomorrow. But I was hoping maybe some you moms whose lo's have reflux could answer a couple questions I have.

1. Is this something that can form over time, or am I stupid and he's had it since birth?

2. Does it go away as he gets older? If so, what is the average age?

3. What is the most common medicine prescribed?

TIA

Re: ?'s for Reflux moms

  • My pedi said it was common to show symptoms between 4-5 weeks of age and most babies are symptom free somewhere between 4-9 months. My pedi perscribed Axid, he said that some of the others dont taste very good and over time the baby will completely reject it. That being said since my little guy is a projectile vomiter we have trouble keeping the medicine down. It is a very slow process of giving the medicine drop by tiny drop over the course of 20 minutes- sometimes it works other times he vomits it up none the less.

    Good luck!!

  • 1.  Like pp, our pedi said it shows signs around 4-5 wks

    2.  It can go away around 4-6 mo but often longer

    3.  We were given Pepcid and it is working great to help my DS's pain while/after eating, back arching, crying, etc.  He still spits up a lot.  It seems like a lot of people on here get Zantac but my dr likes Pepcid better (she said Zantac was alcohol-based and had a strong wintergreen flavor).

Other than the spit up does ds seem like a happier baby? Does he sleep better?

  • Our LO developed reflux around 4 weeks of age - he was initially prescribed Zantac, but that did nothing for him.  We then went to a GI specialist, at the recommendation of our Pedi and he was changed to Prevacid.  DS loves the new medicine (the fact that is tastes like cherry helps :).... the Prevacid kicked in immediately.  Previously he was crying out during feedings, arching his back in pain, punching his fists in the air, screaming.. he had some spit up after burping, but not a lot.  He had a few projectile vomit episodes, but not a lot.  With the medicine he rarely spits up and projectile vomiting has only happened once since.  The GI specialist said that he will outgrown it between 5-7 months of age.  He also said that it will get worse before it gets better and that he will take a second medicine in addition to the Prevecid at some point during the treatment.  Good luck!

  • We tried DD on Zantac and it wasn't working so Pedi switched us to Pepcid, which has been fantastic!  We are also using the Similac Senstivie RS for "less frequent spit up" and have noticed a tremendous change!  HTH and good luck with battleing the war on reflux, it gets better!
