Luke is a nickname?

It seems that there are several that believe Luke is a nn for Lucas and is not an actual given name. Ever heard of Luke in the Bible? I see it as a stand-alone name, not necessarily a nn for Lucas. Although, it does work well as a nn for Lucas. Anyone with me on this? Luke is not strictly a nickname! Phew, it's nice to get that one off my chest.

Re: Luke is a nickname?

  • Oh yes, totally agree! Luke is a handsome name on its own.

  • I have this pet peeve with people who think Eli has to be a nn.  Like Luke, it is also a name from the bible as is.
  • I think it's kind of a translation of Lucas, actually.  If you read the Bible in Latin, that book is called Lucas....it's something like Loucan in Greek.

This. Plus, I think the reason it can seem unfinished as luke is a result of the popularity of Lucas. You have to consider the context in which people are hearing it- Lucas with nn Luke is not at all uncommon. It's not that it has to be a nickname, just that to some people now it is heard more as a nn than a stand-alone name.

Ok, so Lucas is actually Luke but in another language. Interesting! I love going back to the original hebrew or greek meanings of the Bible.

  • I have always, and will always, think of Luke as a nickname for Lucas.
  • We would have loved to use Luke but it didn't work with our last name.  Several people told me to use Lucas, but I said no because I loved Luke, not Lucas!

  • I'm with you! Luke is a very nice name, and it stands alone!

  • My little man is Luke. Not Lucas. Not Luca. Just Luke. And I love it.
  • I see it as a name on its own.

  • Thank you! This annoys the crap out of me! Luke is a name on its own. I know kids named Luke and kids named Lucas. None of the kids named Lucas go by Luke, they are Lucas. Two different names.

  • I say either way is fine.  We may name our next boy ...Lucas and call him Luke.  But, I like doing given names for flexibility.

Off subject just a bit...I also love Luciano...but it would be very strange for a (most likely) blonde hair and  blue eyed kid....who is everything, but Italian. lol  Oh well.

  • A lot of people I have talked to think that Luke is a nn for Lucas. However, who cares? I LOVE Luke and do not like Lucas at all. So, I'm naming my baby boy Luke and will just tell everyone who thinks it's "improper" to kindly shut up :)
  • I think Luke is a wonderful name by itself...but I think it also makes a good nickname. My brother is Lucian and goes by Luke...
  • Indeed!

My grandfather's name is Luke.  My cousin's DS' middle name is Luke.  Not only a nickname!
