TTC after 35

When would you see a doc?

Hi Ladies, i post now and then, id like to more but restricted at work, anyway i am 38 and will be 39 in september and this is our 6 cycle (i know its not that long ttc) we are ttc our 1st, but you hear and read if you havent conceived in 6mths and over 35 see your doc, so if nothing happens this month, should i? Thank you ladies!! Big Smile

Re: When would you see a doc?

  • I would go if nothing happens...they will probably do more tests than you OB would do so if there is a problem it can be addressed.

Hopefully you won't have to, though. Smile

  • Thanks Chicken, its frustrating because im not coming of bc or anything like that.....il just have to wait and see and then visit my doc, i know so much about ttc now that there are a few things i will ask him to test for, like low progestrone and polyps (they are my main concern) and of course DH wont get away easily.....thanks again! Big Smile
  • Yep, I would.  Call now so that you can get in at the right time during your cycle. You can always cancel the appt if you need to ... or turn it into a OB appt hopefully.  GL!

I agree completely and if you need the appt, the initial testing is pretty easy. Good luck!

  • I think it is a very personal decision when to see a doctor about fertility testing, but I have also heard that most OBs will do further testing if you have been trying for greater than 6 months and are over 35.  I think under 35, they want you to try for a year.  I am 35 and have been TTC for 7 cycles, but we got pregnant and had a M/C on our 6th cycle.  We just started trying again and will probably give it a few more cycles before we start testing because we did manage to land one.  I have done some home testing with an FSH kit (normal) and did OPK testing for a few months and ovulated at a regular interval (about the same time each month) so no red flags for me (other than I don't have a baby yet).  I think when we do start testing, we will be starting with DH because his testing is a lot less invasive.  Good luck!
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Thanks ladies, GL to you all, im in the 2ww though my chart is not saying....took a bit of a break from temping, i will wait and see if we are lucky this month if not i will be on the phone on cd1 (hoping and praying we will be)!!!
  • My OB-gyn recommended further testing in 6-8 months of TTC or if my cycles were running 60 days, we would test earlier.  Hope that helps!  GL to you during your 2ww.  Looks like we are in 2ww together =)

  • I would go ahead and see one.

I was charting prior to TTC #1, had very predictable cycles and was able to get pg the very first try.  Fast forward to TTC #2.  I went to my OB after trying for 3 months and she wanted me to wait 6 but I just knew something was wrong.  My chart was all over the place, never got a positive OPK and I had random bleeding during the month.  I found another OB who went ahead and did some testing and found out there was an issue and we're treating it.

Hopefully we'll both find out we're pregnant this month!  Big Smile

  • I would go ahead an make an appt.  It might take a few weeks to be seen.  Praying that you won't need the appt, but if you do, you will be ready for the testing.

I started asking my OB for testing after 7 months TTC #3.  She made me feel like I was being impatient, so I made my own RE appt.  Thankfully I did, because through testing, we found out I have poor ovarian reserve.  "Just keep trying" wasn't going to cut it for me!

  • Ive been ttc for 15 months but I do have an eight year old and had no problem conceiving, so we waited and figured it would happen because I have had no fertilty problems, I also have a 17 year old.  when I conceived my  son  I was 27 and had no problem getting pg.  Now 8 years later and I am 36......different story (15 cycles) So I went in for my yearly and my gyno doc put me  on clomid, out of the blue. He  did a thyroid test and scheduled me for a pelvic US for in april.   I wish we would have started this 9 months ago.....Get on it ASAP every year after age 35 fertility drops significantly.  One statistic I read said 3.9% a year and add that to the fact that half of all your eggs are bad after age 35.  I also just read the other day that a women is born with around 3 million eggs and when she hits 13 (or starts period) she only has 300 left.  So us girls over 35 have no time to spare..........I know  it's a lot to take in I wish they would do an awareness campaign on fertility because so many don't know these things, I was shocked and it freaked and bummed me out. Now I am mad I didn't get right to it, so get on it ASAP.  Goodluck!!!!
  • I would go.  DH and I are TTC our first and my doc told me to come back in three months if not pg by then. I also have other issues (type 1 diabetic and am on blood pressure med).

?YES! I say stop wasting time and get some more help. It'll only frustrate you if you don't. And don't just go to your ob/gyn, go see an RE (if your ins covers it or if you can afford it). I wasted time going to a few different ob/gyns and they all stunk!?

  • I was 35 when I got married and so my husband and I wanted to start a family right away. We tried for 3 months on our own when I suspected that I was not ovulating. I had been on birth control pills for 13 years prior to getting married. I just went to my doc and informed her of my fear of not ovulating and she did some blood work that confirmed my thoughts. I then was referred to a fertility specialist. I am happy to report that I gave birth to my son 6 weeks ago! If I were I you, I would make a appointment with your doctor soon!
