Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Solids Q - for BF baby....

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what they did....I have been giving solids to ds since 4 1/2 months.  I nurse him first and then feed him veg/fruit mixed usually with oatmeal.  No matter how much food I have given him in one feeding he always screams for more.....I've tried more oatmeal and the stage one jar (2.5 oz) wanted more.....so I started using the stage two tubs (3.5 oz).  Even if he eats two tbls of oatmeal mixed with the 3.5 oz tub after nursing he still screams....I usually let him sit for a few minutes fussing and I think the food settles.  Tonight I tried giving him a sippy with water to break up the feeding.  I don't want to give him any more than that cause I don't want him to get a belly ache and I want him to nurse before bed...anyone else experience this?

Re: Solids Q - for BF baby....

  • I never nursed then went straight to meal time, I kept them separate because that worked best for us. I would say to feed him til he stops eating. Babies are great at knowing when they are full. If he eats more and spits up lots afterwards, then you know for the next time that it was probably too much!

  • That does seem like a lot.... I'd  would try nursing him again after if he still seems hungry.
  • How long did you wait between nursing and meal time.?

  • I had to stop breastfeeding at 6 1/2 months so we only were doing solids and breastfeeding for a couple weeks, but I would always nurse pretty much right before feeding him.....mostly b/c I was having to nurse very often (1-2 hrs) by that point, but our situation wasn't normal!
  • Around 7 months I started giving DS 2 stage 2's at dinner time (6ish) and the I'd nurse him to bed at 7.  He lets me know if he's full and has never had any belly aches as a result.  He also lets me know if he's still hungry and sometimes he'll actually want more then that.  Babies will let you know when they are full, I'd just give him more.

  • I've been meaning to write this post!!!!! DS does the same thing!! Our pedi says to feed him until he stops. DS is a big eater too! He ate TWO bananas with oatmeal for breakfast one day last week! I've started nursing and immediately feeding him after. I make his babyfood, but he will normally eat 4-6 oz after nursing! DS is in the 10-15% for his weight, I hope this helps. Good luck to you.
  • DS eats at least 7 ounces of baby food at dinner time and still nurses to bed at 7:00 or 7:30. I would say to just feed your LO more food.
