When can you hear the heartbeat?

I didn't hear DD's until 10 weeks and I had ultrasounds at 6 and 8 weeks.  I'm curious because a girl at work that recently m/c is pg again and said she waited to tell this time until they heard the heartbeat.  We think she is only 5-5 1/2 weeks pg.  Would she have already been able to hear it?  Thanks

Re: When can you hear the heartbeat?

  • Usually your first appt isn't until around 8 weeks because that's when you get an u/s and can see the heartbeat but not all the time.  So everyone is different. You didn't hear yours until 10 weeks, so you kind of answered your own question.
  • 6.5 weeks with both ds and this baby. We heard and saw the heartbeat.

  • Why do you think she's only 5.5 weeks? If that's what she told you, then maybe she's using gestational age. If that's the case, then she'd be 7.5 weeks pregnant and she would have been able to see the heartbeat on an ultrasound.
  • I get that everyone is different and may hear it at a different time.  I guess my question was more of When is it possible to hear it?
  • The heart starts to beat between 5.5 and 6 weeks so she def may be able to hear it on an US. You can not hear it on doppler until around 11 weeks or so. I saw and heard my babies all at 6 weeks on the dot!
