I remember working at a camp one summer an one of our staff had never seen fire/red ants and was amazed at how much the bites hurt. I can't for the life of me remember what state she was from, but she said she had never seen/heard of them before.
We don't have them in WI that I know of. But I'll never forget camping in the Gulf of Mexico and having a fire aunt invasion in my tent. Yikes those bad boys know how to bite!
I'm on the border of SC/GA so definitely. I don't think the bites hurt that bad but they stay sore and itchy for days and days, on me anyway. Oh, and they're attracted to electrical fields- got in DH's car engine once and it wouldn't start. Took him days and a towing to figure out the problem.
fire ants are the worst! my poor dog got attacked by them at the kennel. he scratched so bad that his neck was all bloody. he has scars from it and the fur grew back weird. we always have to watch out for them in the yard here in FL.
Re: Are there fire ants where you live?
We don't really have them here. (Michigan)
I know they're all over Florida and Georgia, I'm guessing they're mostly an issue in the South.
We are infested here in Texas, not a week goes by that one of the kids does not get bitten starting in the spring.
