I have the Balboa Baby one by Dr Sears and never really used it until this past week. If he is sitting up facing out and away from me, not in a cradle position, is this ok? I am debating whether or not I need to get rid of this sling. Thanks.
It sounds ok. I think the article was saying that they are now warning against using all slings for babies under 4 months, and also recalling some because babies were suffocating when facing their moms or when they had the sling fabric against their face. If you keep DS with his head outside of it, it sounds ok. Just make sure if he falls asleep on you or something that he can breathe.

They also warned against low birth weights, preemies, and babies with breathing problems like a cold being in slings.
The problem with the slings they are recalling is that they keep a baby in a "c" shaped position. Newborns should be worn in an upright position. You can get them in an upright position in certain slings (like a ring sling). So not all slings are dangerous, you just have to use common sense and look into baby wearing safety.

How about paying attention to your kid when its in the sling. I have a Maya and the instructions flat out say not to ignore the child when its in the sling, to keep an eye on it and make sure that airways are clear at all times. I would think making sure your baby isnt suffocating up against you or with its face in fabric would be a common sense thing.

I haven't heard of the recall, but from what I remember, the problem is with pouch slings, not ring slings, and the balboa baby is a ring sling.
