NTTCR: Anyone into Broadway shows/musicals?

DH and I are chaperoning a trip to NYC this weekend with my school. DH has lived in NY his whole live, never been to NYC, I have lived in FL all my life and have been to NYC many times. I am so excited for him!

We are going to see The Lion King. I have seen it on Bway before but was not impressed. I think DH will absolutely love it, though.

I might get in on another group from my school going to see Wicked (touring show) in a few weeks, I am DYING to see it.

Any other giant nerds here? What is your favorite show?

Re: NTTCR: Anyone into Broadway shows/musicals?

  • me, me... I haven't seen too many, but I LOVE LOVE Rent and Mama Mia.

I am seeing Wicked in June, and I just saw Phantom.

  • I'm not a huge musical nerd, but I do love them when I get the chance to see them!  The Lion King is my favorite, it really is amazing...you didn't like it?  I saw it in NYC in 2005.  I guess my other favorite would be Phantom of the Opera.

  • Out of the shows that are running right now, I LOVE Wicked.  I've seen it on tour and on Broadway, and it is SO much better in NYC.

My favorite musical ever is Parade.  It is an amazingly complex story, and the music is gorgeous and haunting.

  • I saw In the Heights last year and it was a lot of fun. I love musical theater but a lot of my favorite shows aren't on broadway anymore.  I love Rent, Spring Awakening, and Avenue Q.  Avenue Q left broadway but is still playing off broadway.  It is hilarious!  It's a bit crass so it's not for everyone, but I absolutely love it.  It might also be a bit cheaper because it is off broadway.  There is info at www.avenueq.com.  Have fun in NY!

  • I haven't been to many because tix are so dang expensive, but a student of mine got us tix to Phantom a couple months ago, and to Wicked next month!  Two of my faves.  I also love Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Mis.  Standard fare. :)

I went to a matinee of it and there were little kids EVERYWHERE. Every one of them thinking it was going to be just like the movie. It was just a PITA! I saw it, 42nd street, and The Full Monty the same weekend. The Full Monty was so freaking good the Lion King paled in comparison (in my mind, that is).

This might be one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

I'm imagining the kids coming home from the field trip and their parents saying "So, tell me about the play you saw."  "Well mom, there was a character named Lucy the Slut and a song called 'You Can Be As Loud As The Hell You Want When You're Making Love.'"

We saw ads for that while we were in NYC, but we didn't have any time to see any while we were there... I was quite disappointed.   I will try to see that one for sure whenever i can.

  • I'm not a nerd about it, but I like to catch a s how here and there.  We're seeing The Lion King on 4/18.  I'm thinking Wicked will be the next one.  Let me know how you like it!

I have seen Les Miserables, Jersey Boys, Aida, Rent, Fela! and Beauty and the Beast over the years.  Les Mis was awesome.

I prefer Dance of the Robe and How I Know You, but really, everything from that show is great!

  • I saw the original cast of Aida a bunch of times!!!  I was in college and my roommate and I would take the train into the the city and get sit in line to buy the discount tix at the theater... I also got to see Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in Wicked.  Their chemistry was amazing!  And Taye Diggs (Idina Menzel's DH) was playing Fiyero.  He had to throw a broom to Idina Menzel and his toss was totally off the mark and he was just like "let's try that again".  Everyone on stage broke character - it was hilarious!  DH gets mad at me when I belt showtunes to DS while dancing around the family room... I'm a nerd, what can I say?
  • My mom and I go to musicals probably 7 or 8 times a year.  My favorites are Wicked, Chicago, Mamma Mia, Miss Saigon, Movin' Out, Phantom.  I could probably go on :)

(Did you see Full Monty or Blast! ? they both got the axe post-9/11 but were such great shows playing right around when Aida played)

  • I used to work at theatre in college in the ticket office, so I always had amazing seats to any show I wanted to see. I am pretty sure that I never sat further back than about 7th row center, which has definitely spoiled me for any concert/musical/play since.

I would say that Rent would have to be my all time favorite, but I also loved Chicago, The Full Monty and The Producers.

My mom and I were in line to get tickets for the Producers when we noticed a sign for The Pillowman...we decided on Pillowman. It is just a play, but it was so dang good. I still have to see The Producers someday!

  • I'm a HUGE musical fan.  I went on study tour in college to London for "British Culture through Theatre" even though I wasn't a theater major.  I saw 14 shows in 21 days including Phantom and Les Mis in the same day! Total nerd.  I'm like you though, I didn't think Lion King was all that great (even in London).

We're lucky enough to get touring shows into Seattle a few Broadway ones that started there.  DH isn't usually a fan but he LOVED Avenue Q.  Memphis is on Broadway now and we saw it in development in Seattle, so good!  Rent is still one of my all time favorites.  So is Chicago.

  • I've never been to NYC, so I've never seen a Broadway musical on Broadway, but we have a theater that has them a few times a year.  A few years ago, we went to see The Phantom of the Opera.  This Spring we're going to see Lion King.  I saw Les Miserables when I was in high school. (and I am so sad it's not on tour anymore, I really want to share that with DH!)  I've seen some of them that were turned into movies and have really liked them.
  • I live in NY so I've seen quite a few.  Wicked by far is my favorite followed by Rent.
