Babies: 9 - 12 Months

if your LO is between 6-7 months, come on in...

Is your LO still waking up in the middle of the night for a bottle? DD goes to bed at 8pm and wakes up between 2am-4am, drains 6 ounces, then sleeps until 6:30am.

Do you think she's not getting enough to eat during the day? She has 4ozs when she wakes up, cereal for bfast, veggie for lunch, and cereal and fruit for dinner. She has formula in between and 6 ounces before bed.

Thoughts??

  • DS still wakes up once a night and I give him 4 oz.  I think that's still totally normal.

  • Yes. DS wakes up once around 2am and once around 5am. I try soothing him without nursing but usually he wants nothing of it and only wants to nurse. A plus side, he only eats for 10-15 minutes before falling back asleep and I'm pretty used to it now. I figure he'll sleep all the way through when he's ready. He's on 3 solid meals a day and nurses 4 or 5 times a day as well so he might just have a big appetite, needing a top-up overnight.

  • She was actually up 5-6 times/night. We started Ferber this week because we are exhausted and practically non-functioning, on the advice of her pedi. So far, so good.
  • dd is once a night for a bottle 2-3 ounces and 4-5 times for her binky back in her mouth.

We are trying to phase it out, but she is really cranky at night with the teething and makes it hard to make changed=s right now.

  • DD nurses a LOT in the evening - right up until bedtime - and still nurses at least once during the night, and she's not really on solids yet.
  • Not frequently, but it does happen.
  • DS still wakes up 3-5 times a night.  Sometimes to eat, sometimes because he misses me and wants to be held/comforted.  He is teething, so I'm totally ok with it.

  • My DD is almost 9m and still wakes up most nights for a bottle. We're slowly reducing the number of ounces she takes overnight. Used to be 6, then 5, and now we do 4.

  • Yes...I have been struggling about what to do but since he takes down 8 ounces at 1 a.m. I continue to do it.  If he was just snacking (less than 6 ounces), I would not do it...but since he seems genuinely hungry and then goes RIGHT back to sleep, I don't mind.

BTW, my LO goes down at 7 and gets up at 1 or 2 for the 8 ounce bottle and sleeps until 7ish.  I don't think that's too bad. :P

  • Oh, to answer your question...

It's possible that she isn't getting enough formula during the day. At 6-7m, solids shouldn't be replacing the breastmilk or formula. Babies that age should still be getting the majority of their calories from BM/formula.

My DD is getting 30oz of formula a day, with 2 small solids meals in between. This is on the upper end of the range but we've had some low-weight issues that we're resolving. I think 24ish is normal?

  • DD "naps" from about 7:30-10:30 pm, has anywhere between 2-8oz (random, huh?), then is down by 11 - 11:30 pm, and doesn't get back up until between 8:30-10 am the next morning.
  • i EBF, and he doesn't take bottles.

he still wakes up 1-2x/night and i feed him. i'm hoping to get him off of night feedings by 8 months.

  • Yes- LO still wakes up.  And we've had a growth spurt or something in the past few days because she regressed back to nursing every 2 hours.  I hope this phase ends soon.

  • C does not wake up to eat- he sleeps through the night.  He's eating about 30 oz during the day and we're just starting solids.
  • I noticed DS was waking up out of habit, not hunger.  I would give him his pacifer and if he woke up again shortly I would then feed him 4 oz.  I won't give him a full bottle in the middle of the night because I don't want him to depend on a meal.

  • DD sleeps through but what you describe also sounds normal. Maybe try to give her higher volume during the day and see if you can slowly step her down to 5 oz, 4 oz, 3 oz etc during that night feeding and see how she does.

  • He goes to bed about 7, and needs to eat anywhere from 4-6. He gets about 30 ounces a day, including 6 before bed also. He is getting an ounce of cereal, and about 2 ounces of fruit and 2 ounces of vegis a day.

He has been waking more due to teething, but I don't feed him.

At 5 months the pedi said he didn't need to eat in the middle of the night anymore, so if he woke I quit feeding.

  • DS is still up at night to eat as well!
  • J doesn't need a night feeding.  He drinks about 24 oz. of formula and has 3 meals.  Would your daughter take more formula at each feeding?  She may not be ready to sleep through the night yet, but if she'll take more during the day it may help her to sleep for a longer stretch.
