I've always started out with Pampers swaddlers. I loved the Sensitive ones that have the strip to tell you if the baby pee'd.
We moved to huggies when both my kids (boy and girl) were at size 2. Now I do Walmart diapers during the day at daycare and huggies overnight at night.
I used the pampers swaddlers when they were just born and now use the pampers cruisers during the day and pampers stay dry at night. I tried Huggies and found that they leaked and left a lot of moisture on the skin. I also tried Walmarts and thought they felt too rough. So, I am sticking with Pampers.
Ethan was a Pampers baby until I became pg with Jack and realized I was going to have two babies in diapers so I decided to save some money. I first tried Target's brand and they were terrible. Then someone suggested I try Luvs. IMO, Luvs are JUST AS GOOD as Pampers. I love Luvs. Besides a couple of packages of Pampers that were given as gifts, Jack has only worn Luvs. Luvs are cheaper than Pampers and I buy a box for around $30 at BJs. I noticed that Ethan did poorly in Huggies and they would leak, BUT night time Huggies are great and that's what Jack wears at night.
I started out with Pampers swaddlers sensitive for sizes newborn-2. After that, I buy whatever is on sale or I have a coupon for. Either Huggies or Pampers. Never had an issue with either. Tried Luvs, hated them.
We have always used Pampers. First Swaddlers then Cruisers. FWIW, i have tried a lot of other brands and nearly kicked myself every single time b/c i felt like they didn't measure up. I always went back to pampers as soon as i was done with the box of the "other" brands.
Never even tried the others with my 2nd. I learned enough the 1st time around that Pampers were the ones for us. Most specifically Swaddlers and Cruisers....not Baby Dry.
After our pamper stash from the hospital was gone I wised up and went for the cheap option, which was Kirkland at Costco. Every baby is different but as long as they don't leak and are cheap(ish) then that's what I'd say to look for, after all they pee/poop in them. I used Kirkland brand since size 1. Kirkland is the same diaper as huggies so I switch back and fourth depending on what I can get the best deal on. This matters more as you go up in size and the quantity that you get goes down.
We've always been a Pampers baby. We tried some huggies when he was really small and they didn't fit well and leaked. We also had a box of Kirkland's in size 1 from Costco. We liked these but aren't members of Costco and its not convient enough to join for diapers. So, we've stuck with Pampers. I didn't feel like spending money on other diapers and then if they didn't work out, I had wasted money and was stuck with a bunch of diapers.
Other than cloth diapers, we've tried a couple of things. Rowan started out in Pampers Swaddlers. We had a couple of Huggies samples too but I thought that the Pampers were a better fit.
We did buy a pack of the Huggies Pure and Natural too when they first came out b/c I had some great coupons. We hated them. They leaked really bad and smelled kind of funny.
When Rowan was ready to move to size 2-3's we tried a pack of Pampers Baby Drys. I didn't like them that much, but they did a sufficient job.
I bought Cruisers next and have pretty much stuck with them. I always shop with coupons so it makes them more "cost competitive."
We did mostly Pampers Swaddlers in the beginning b/c the hospital gave us a TON. Then we moved on to Huggies b/c I did feel like they were better for Gavin b/c he went through this phase of peeing up out of the diaper- even when we were pointing him down. Anyway, after he got over that phase I just bought whatever was on sale. Then around 6 mos, I got brave and bought a huge box of Luvs at BJ's and I fell in love with them. They have been my favorites ever since. Never had a leak in them. We also use Target diapers a lot too and I love them as well. My advice to everyone is not to stock up on one brand b/c you just never know.
We used Pampers Swaddlers in the beginning. Then moved to Pampers baby dry and cruisers (which ever is on sale). At night though, the Huggies Goodnights seem to work best.

It's just trial and error.
