why are GAP and Old Navy sizes so different?

They are the same company, so why are the sizes so different?

I bought 18-24 mo long sleeve shirts from ON for S and he's about to outgrow them.  I bought 2T t-shirts for this summer and they fit now and they fit well.  I don't know if they are going to last until the end of the summer.

I bought him a couple 18-24 months t-shirts from BabyGap last summer for him and they are too big, but will probably fit him well come summer.

WTH?!

Re: why are GAP and Old Navy sizes so different?

  • Not only are they different between GAP and Old Navy, they're also different just within the store!

I wear a size 8 at old navy and GAP.  But I have to try on 4 pairs of size 8s just to find ones that fit.  Some fit way big, some way small.  It's crap.

  • Yeah, I've found the same thing in the women's department too. Some smalls fit perfect and others are so tight across my boobs that I can't breathe! I can't order things online from either store because I never know what I'm going to get.
  • Manufacturing.  The ON clothes are manufactured differently and are lower quality.  And even though they are the same company - that doesn't mean that all the brands are manufactured with the same standards/sizing, etc.  It's the same in the adult versions.  There's a definite difference in fit and sizing between ON, Gap, BR and Athleta.
  • Yeah, I've had this issue too with clothes for myself.  Seems Gap does run bigger.
