Enlarged Kidneys

Did anyone else's LO have enlarged kidneys during your ultrasounds?  I went into today for a follow up for my DS's enlarged kidneys (I'm 32 weeks).  They're not "that" bad.  They want them to be 7mm or under and one is 8mm and the other is 7mm.

I just wanted to hear your stories if your LO had these during their ultrasound. TY.

Re: Enlarged Kidneys

  • yes. k has this (hydronephrosis). so far, all it has required is monitoring. many times, it clears up on its own once they're born though....i hope that's the case for your LO

  • My DS did, both kidneys. He had to have antibiotics from the day he was born until he was 2 weeks old when he had an u/s on his kidneys (still enlarged), and then he an unpleasant test called a a VCUG to see if his bladder was refluxing urine back into the kidneys. Basically they insert a catheter and shoot die up there and wait for him to pee. You watch on a large screen to see if he's refluxing. It was hard to watch but over pretty quick. In my DS's case, he was not refluxing and the doctor said that is usually the case. They gave us no explanation for the enlarged kidneys and he will be checked one more time before he is 2. GL, hope it ends up being nothing for your DS as well.

  • They both had enlarged kidneys (I forgot to check your ticker, but it is more common in boys than girls... don't know why).  DS1 had an u/s at 1 or 2 days old to make sure all was clear.  If not, they would have given him antibiotics.  Everything was normal at birth.

DS2's were not enlarged enough to even check after birth (so probably like your 7mm?).  Also, both my niece and nephew had enlarged kidneys in u/s and were fine at birth!

    I think it's very common.

Also, we along with our pedi insisted on the u/s this early.  The hospital wanted to just put him on antibiotics and do the u/s later.  Pedi and I both were adamant that he would not be on antibiotics unless it was necessary.  So glad we insisted because it turns out he didn't need antibiotics!!
