3rd Trimester

Enlarged kidneys

I had a second ultrasound today to follow up up on my DS's enlarged kidneys.  They wanted them to be under 7mm and one side was 8 mm and the other was 7mm.  Does anyone else's LO have this?  I'm doing the best I can trying not to google it.  I know it would only freak my out.

Re: Enlarged kidneys

  • My LO has dilated kidneys - they are around 8.8 cm.  Basically it is no reason to worry and there isn't anything you can do to improve the sitch.  MY MFM has recommended that LO get a sonogram of the kidneys after birth and then most likely follow-up with antibiotics (to prevent/treat a kidney infection).  The pediatricians are experts and apparently this is very common.  Most time it clears up on its own.  I have also heard that they monitor the output of urine post birth (in some cases).

  • pp says it all. LO's kidneys are measuring large too, but just barely above normal. I googled it and got freaked out before going for my ultrasound that was scheduled solely to look at the kidneys...after talking to the doctor there though, I was really relieved. It does usually just take care of itself.

  • My LO also has a swollen kidney, in fact in the last ultrasound on Fri, one was only slightly enlarged, but the other was up to 10 or 11mm.  However, the doctors tell me the same thing--not to worry that it is common and usually corrects itself at birth and that they will definitely follow up and check on him once he's born. His pedi is already aware of it, and once he's born we'll definitely remind her again. I also asked my doc if the baby felt any pain because of it and he said no, none at all, which was comforting. Guess I'll know more after he's born---which is hopefully any day now!! Smile
  • I just wanted to say that my DS had enlarged kidneys in utero and by the time he was born it had resolved itself. :)

Yes, I asked about pain for LO also - and luckily I got the same answer :)  Also the possible treatments for the kidneys (antibiotics, sonograms, and weighing urine) are also not painful :)
