Insuring baby

So DH needs to add Nathan to his insurance policy at work.  Medical is a duh but did anybody get dental and vision insurance for their newborn?  If we don't get these polices then the next time we can opt in for it is in January.  So just thought I'd see if I could get some other people's thoughts on it.  TIA!

Re: Insuring baby

  • IMO, it would be a waste of money.  If there was an issue with his sight at this age, it's probably due to something else that would be covered under major medical.  He won't have teeth for a long time and I think it's generally recommended to take LO's to the dentist around 3-4 years old, anyway.  It's a good question to ask, but I wouldn't do it.

I wouldn't (and didn't).  DD had to see the eye doctor during her first year, but it was one visit and I think it cost us $100 or so- less than premiums would have been for vision coverage, I'm sure.
  • When we added ds through my husbands insurance policy we added him to medical insurance, dental, and vision. We have a family plan, so the cost didn't go up to what we were already paying. I added him to everything at once so we didn't have to worry about it.

They (pediatricians and dentists) recommend that you see them 6 mos after cutting their first tooth (American Dental Association actually says when they cut their first tooth).

We took Jack at his 2nd birthday and Dr. Chang had suggested it at his 15 mo. appt.

So, yeah, you could hold off on dental for the year, but I would probably opt in next January.

  • Hmm.  I guess things have changed.  I worked in insurance for years and age 4 was the typical suggested age.  My pedi has NEVER mentioned going to the dentist yet, with either kid and they both have lots of teeth.  We like her okay, but I'm kind of not surprised this info hasn't been passed on to us...  Bleh.  We don't see her enough and I'm too lazy to change doctors.
