NBR: How do you dispose of cooking grease/oil?

I'm always hesitant to fry foods because it's such a PITA to dispose of the oil. We fried some fish last night...and now I'm curious what the nestie preferred method of oil disposal is.

  • I just did what my dad used to do and that was put it in a coffee can and let it cool, then just throw it away.  But I don't know if that's the best way to do it.

  • That's what I remember from growing up too. We always had a coffee can of grease under the sink.

  • Ditto AJL.  I don't know what I'll do with it once it's full!

    This.

  • I put a couple of paper towels in the trash and then pour it on when it's still liquid, but not hot enough to cause a trash fire. I have tried the coffee can thing, but I must not be coordinated enough because I spill.

  • typically i use the coffee can, but if it's meat that just came out of the grocery store packaging (that's deep enough), I'll drain straight back into the styrofoam/plastic and then put a couple of paper towels in there to soak it all up - then dump in the trash.

when the coffee can is full, i just throw it in the trash - should i not?

  • I keep a few empty jars under the kitchen sink.  I use them to store oil and grease from cooking. I keep the jar in the fridge until it's full and then throw it away.  I never pour grease down the sink.
