Babies: 9 - 12 Months

late clapper

DD still isn't clapping. I talked to my pedi about it and he said that she is perfect and not to worry, BUT i do anyway.  She brings her hands together but doesn't care anything about clapping.  Anyone else have a late clapper how did you fianlly get them to do it?

Re: late clapper

  • I just checked my 'first year' calendar and DD didn't start clapping until she was 9 months 3 weeks old, right on the eve of 10 months.  We occasionally played "pat a cake" but she didn't like us showing her how to clap.  It was all the sudden one day she was clapping like crazy.  You can make her hands do a clapping motion and that might tempt her more but she will do it in her own time :)  And it'll be so cute when she figures it out- nothing is more adorable than the sound of their palms slapping.. Lol.

  • DS doesn't clap. He was a preemie so I never stress about his milestones b/c I know some have been earlier and some have been later...i just keep doing patty cake and practicing but I don't try to make him in any other way. I figure he will when he does and pedi has never been concerned about any of his developments.

  • Ry just started clapping, kind of. He's done it once or maybe twice. He has no desire. He bangs things together though.
  • No Clapping yet, but DD sure does like to try and point.

  • Sam won't clap, he'll just wave his arms. He laughs when Jake claps though.  I have one mover and one talker.

  • Okay, you have to calm down.

So much is dictated by personality and has little to do with intellect or reaching a milestone.

Blowing kisses, waving, clapping, playing with feet/eating feet (grant never did that), etc are all personality related and not every kid does them nor does every kid do them at a specific time.

THAT is why your pedi is not concerned. If your LO shows no other signs of developmental delay (thinking big muscular things and basic social interaction) there is no reason to be worried.

DON'T WORRY about when other people's kids do something.

  • DS didn't clap until 11 months. Just keep clapping with her, and she'll get the hang of it. No reason to worry about it, though.  Smile
