pureed broccoli - anyone have success? veg recs?

this morning i tried pureed broccoli, and it did not go over well.  is broccoli too advanced for babies who are still on stage 1?  the texture is so different.

my kids are moving through the stages slowly per the peds order.  wholesomebabyfood.com says it's a good stage 2 food, which surely we are ready for.  but even my easy eater made the face with the broccoli.

so far we've done green beans, peas, squash (various), yams, avocoado, pears, applesauce (homemade gave them diahrea), blueberry/apple.  anything i'm missing?

  • Hi there!  Broccoli is a tough one on its own.  I would try to mix it with something sweeter like the yams or sweet potaotes.  Also, you didn't mention that you tried carrots yet, but that's a popular one with most babies, and can be mixed with broccoli as well.  I've tried a lot of recipes from the book, "Top 100 Baby Purees," by Annabel Karmel and love it!

For broccoli, the book recommends steaming instead of boiling to retain its nutrients, and then pureeing together with the sweet potatoes, yams, butternut squash, or carrots.  The book even says to add a little butter (which I haven't done) and a little of their usual milk.

Another veggie worth trying:  parsnip.  I've mixed them with carrots and sweet potatoes and the babies love them.  And, you can also try steamed, pureed spinach leaves to sweet potato or squash.

    Hope that helps!

  • thank you so much for the advice!  we do carrots (thought i was forgetting something) and will try mixing the broccoli with those.  and we'll try mixing spinich in soon.... we are dealing with constipation issues lately, so want to get that under control before adding more iron.

  • Like the pp suggested, parsnips are a really good option.  Mine love parsnips mixed with carrots (of course, they love anything mixed with carrots).  We recently started rutabagas...the kids loved this as well.  They have had it plain as well as mixed with various other veggies.  Other ones are:  zucchini, bananas, peaches, apricots, yellow squash, white potatoes.

  • Oh, another of their favorites is pumpkin.
