CIO with LO sitting up in crib? Please help me!

Hi ladies,

I sleep-trained DD when she was 6 months old, and everything was going great and she was STTN after previously waking up 8 to 10 times per night. She was recently sick and then we went on a trip, which resulted in her sleep habits completely deteriorating. She was back to being up 8 to 10 times per night, and so I decided to re-train. We started two nights ago, but here is my issue. She can now sit up by herself, but cannot lay herself back down. She is waking up in the middle of the night, crying, and sitting up the moment I leave the room after doing check-ins. What do I do? Anyone been through anything like this? She fell asleep sitting once last night... I tried to lay her down and she woke up, and it's been a disaster since then (that was at 3:30 AM!). Do I just let her fall sleep sitting and keep her like that?

  • She'll get tired and flop over, I promise.  Do you have bumpers up?  DS stands up in his crib and yells at us.  Eventually he gets tired an lets go to fall asleep.  When he was first standing it it wasn't very graceful, but he's learned quickly.  Going in to put him back down was a waste.  After seeing us in the room he'd start up all over again.

  • When Lila starts to get up on her knees or sit up and is crying. I usually go back in and lay her down. Tell her it's time to hush and to go to sleep. I give the paci, pat her on the back until she's soothed and then leave. I wait progressively longer periods of time. I NEVER take her out of the crib. Soon enough she realizes its not going to do any good and she passes out.

Now it only takes once or twice, and most nights she just goes to sleep anyway with no problems.

  • We didn't need to try to sleep train until DD was ~10 months old after teething/cold etc so she could pull up to stand. She would eventually lay back down.

  • Not the same completely... but DD rolls on her stomach in her sleep, wakes up, and can't get back over unless we roll her. It's tiring, but I think it's all just a stage that they'll grow out of. Hopefully your LO will realize it's not benefiting her in any way, and start sleeping "normally" again. GL!

Exactly this. If you keep going in to lay her down, she will never learn to do it alone.  We ran into this too, but it only took 2-3 days for DS to figure it out because we let him figure it out on his own.

  • I started to just let him cry. He'll sit up but then lay down eventually. I takes about 30 minutes to fully fall asleep.
