My son to be 5 yo still wears a pull-up to bed.Sometimes he wakes up dry, other times not. Sometimes he will get out of bed in the middle of the night to go potty, other times not. Is this typical? Should we stop using the pull- up at night and see what happens? I am so looking forward to no more diapers. We are going to start training the 2 yo soon.
Re: Almost 5 yo not night trained?
From everything I have read, the lack of nighttime dryness is not unusual until even the teens.
There are a variety of reasons why: a not fully developed bladder, a very good sleeper, dreams instigate it, or some body issues that may affect the bladder.
So unless he is having problems during the day, this isn't something you should worry about unless he does it more than naught. Then you can go to the pedi for a work up and some tools.
Mine will be 5 in August and he's far from night-trained (his 2-year-old sister is waking up dry, though...). If I'm not careful about fluids and him using the bathroom before bed, sometimes he even goes through the pullup. He is a VERY sound sleeper and I attribute it to that.
I asked his pediatrician about it and he said that they don't consider it bed-wetting until 8 or 9.
I would never use (and never did) a pull-up to start with. It is the same as a diaper. My kids rarely had night accidents because when they wet at night they were WET!
