Leaking amniotic fluid or not?

How do you know?  I'm about to throw a little TMI out here.  I have a discharge that is coming out in little gushes every so often.  I saturated a pantyliner earlier, and just changed out another one about 20 minutes ago (that was only halfway saturated).  It doesn't really smell like anything.  I've *think* I also have a discharge like very thin eggwhite cm--not sure completely. Oh, and I've been having contractions (like menstrual cramps) off and on all day long.  But I've been experiencing that since 29 weeks, so I hadn't been thinking anything of it.  Should I put in a call to the after hours line just to be on the safe side?  I don't want to be that paranoid woman who calls at the drop of a hat, but I also don't want to be foolish.

  • When I thought mine was leaking the on-call doc had me take a walk to see if any more came and said if I coughed and felt some come out, then it might be.
  • That's what it was like when my water broke. It did eventually gush, but I had a "high" leak so it wasn't clear at first. One tip: the amniotic fluid is very slippery. Good Luck
  • You just described exactly what happened to me before I went into labor. I went in to the doctor, and it wasn't amniotic fluid when they tested it. When they hooked me up to the machines, I was having pretty regular contractions. My water broke at the doctor's office when I stood up from the exam table. I would call- it can't hurt!

  • The exact same thing happened to me.  I called the nurse line on Friday night and they said it was just urine or discharge.  I went to the ER on Saturday when it was still happening, and they said the same thing.  They tested it using a little strip, but the dumb nurse who did the test didn't know how and was reading the instructions on the box as she did it.  Finally, on Monday, I went in for my 40 week apt.  After I was already in the gown and sitting on the table, I had to pee, and while I was in the bathroom, the nurse saw a wet spot on the paper and said right away that she thought I was leaking.  She used the test strip AND sent it up to the lab to look at under a microscope and new within 15 minutes that it was amniotic fluid.  SO, the moral of my story is, trust your body - not what someone tells you on the phone!  If you think it could be, call the nurse line or go in to the ER.  Everything was fine with me, but we went for a few days leaking fluid, so there could have been an infection and he did end up passing meconium in the womb, so they had to take extra precautions after he was born.  Good luck!
