what maternity size should i buy?

good afternoon ladies:well, its gap family and friends weekend so i wanted to buy a few maternity items while they're on super sale.  i don't know why i thought "maternity" was a size... because i had no idea i would have to pick from an extra small or small to a medium even!  i am an extra small normally. do you continue to buy your same size just in maternity clothes? should i buy an extra small or a small to be on the safe side?  normally i love going shopping for clothes...but this is just stressin me out! thank you.

Re: what maternity size should i buy?

  • It's hard to say...but I'd say buy a small if you're normally an xs.  They say that you buy the same as your pre-pregnancy size, but that didn't work for me last time around.  I was a medium, and by the bitter end, I was wearing quite a few XLs!!  I would be careful about buying too much...it's great that it's on sale, but you will probably go up a size or two as time goes on, and you don't want to have to spend a small fortune on clothes just for 9 months!  GL!

Gap Maternity runs pretty true to pre-pregnancy size.  However, Old Navy maternity sizing is all over the place.  If you order anything from Old Navy be sure to read the reviews so you can know whether to order your PP size or down a size.
  • I think as long as it is not Old Navy, buy your pre-pregnancy size. I am normally an XS and S and that is what I have bought. It has just varied by the cut of the shirt whether I went for S or XS. I think some of the XS shirts I got I may grow out of before the end, but they are good for now.
  • I usually wear a large in gap and I ordered a gap shirt and it was a little bit big but I think a Med. would have been to small. If you are going with old navy buy a size smaller than you normaly wear.
  • Not all maternity clotes from Old Navy runs big.   I recommend reading the reviews.   I bought a bunch of things some ran big others true to size.

  • I'm occasionally an xsmall, usually a small, so I've been buying small. And I only buy smalls in ON and it is fine. I think if you are all belly and no extra filling out of the arms, etc then I would stick with your xsmall.

  • I actually just went on a shopping spree at Gap and Old Navy for friends and family day too! Great deals. Many of the jeans were already half off. Have fun!
  • I'd wait until you need stuff. You may be shocked at how little you need, or by what you need.

  • I agree with waiting until you need stuff to buy it.  I didn't need maternity pants until close to 20 weeks.  I just started needing maternity shirts around 23 weeks.  I usually wear a size 8 and the medium maternity clothes fit just fine.  I've been buying most of mine from Motherhood Maternity or Kohl's though.

Actually I had the opposite problem with ON stuff running small.  That was a couple of years ago so maybe they went completly opposite.
