Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Question

Last night I'd asked my fiance to post here and ask about baby constipation (I was busy with the baby and all pharmacies and any/everything else was closed or not answering). He did that but only mentioned that she hadn't pooped in about 2 days and asked about a laxative. He didn't mention our typically quiet baby has been screaming her head off this whole time (with random spurts of sleep) or that before the constipation had started we were breastfeeding but supplementing with formula. I spoke to a Lactation Consultant and she's coming on Tuesday to try to help us get the hang of breast feeding better. She also said to stop the formula completely because the formula could be causing the problem. Meanwhile nothing has changed in my little girl. We started giving her some infants' gas relief drops in hopes that it would help move things along but she's been getting the drops for the past 12 horus and still no sign of relief.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can help her until I can get her to the pediatrician? I've tried all the tricks (i.e. "bicycle legs", rubbing her tummy, bouncing, etc.) with no success.

Re: Question

  • We used glycerin suppositories for our LO. You can ask your pharmacist about what's appropriate for your infant.  Because our LO gets constipated frequently and we don't want her to rely on them for her to have bowel movements what I do (at my mom's suggestion, my sister was uber colicy and gassy and constipated as an infant) is put some petrolium jelly on a q-tip and gently swab the inside of her bum.  It works really well and LO poops on a regular basis now.

Good Luck, I know how frustrating it can be!
