What I don't miss about the NICU

Breastfeeding around all the wires.. getting him latched on only to hear BEEP BEEP BEEP, have a nurse barge in, only to discover his pulse/ox monitor had, for the 9043th time in ten minutes, come off his foot. ?

Changing diapers and clothes around the wires and having to re-stick the 4 main ones back to his chest & belly. ?Oh yeah and the pulse/ox. ?Again.

Logging all diapers and weighing the poopy ones. ?

Tube feeding when you have perfectly good boobs full... but the docs don't let you nurse yet.

Having to walk down the hall seeing all the teeny tiny little babies with absolutely no visitors, ever, knowing that more than a few weren't going to graduate out of the nicu. ?

Having to show ID and re-scrub every time you have to use the bathroom.

Re: What I don't miss about the NICU

  • I don't miss anything about the NICU.  We did have some nice nurses and obviously I was happy to go there to see Ethan, but ugh.  One of the "positives" I'm focusing on about not having another baby is the fact that it means I never have to go through another NICU experience.

Thank G-d NICUs exist and they can take care of the fragile little ones and I'm so grateful that they took such good care of E, but I dont' miss it at all.

  • Yeah they were wonderful, all of them. ?It made me so thankful for what I have. ?I had to watch one baby get read last rights, one was airlifted to another hospital... ?as many little things were wrong with DS, I knew he'd be coming home soon and would be ok. ?The others... not so much.

Even though we are/were lucky. it was still a miserable 9 days.

  • I completely agree! We think we're only having one and I keep thinking...well, at least we won't have to do the NICU again.
