detergent ? for cd-ers

Do you use different detergents for CDs and for your clothes?  I read on another board you shouldn't do this...does it really matter?  Esp. if I do an extra rinse after every wash?

Re: detergent ? for cd-ers

  • We use Charlie's Soap for everything, or Allen's Naturally for everything - depending on which of the two I can get my hands on easiest when I need more.

We used Crunchy Clean for a while as well and liked it.

  • We use charlies for everything now too. Dh for a while was using reg detergent on his stuff but I think the really good reviews of charlie's on amazon convinced him to switch over.

  • Another vote for Charlie's.  We use it for all of our clothes.

  • We usually use Country Save for both and like it. I decided to go back and use up some of our old detergent just to make room in our laundry room so at the moment we are using separate ones. You don't have to use the same one for everything but I think it's just easier.
  • We use Charlie's too.  I used to switch for our stuff, but when we got a new HE washer,  it was just easier since Charlie's works for HE too.  I *think* the reason you're not supposed to switch is because the residue from the other detergent can still be in your washer and affect the CDs.

this is what I heard.  I don't mind using just one, but I use certain detergents for certain clothes and I used liquid fabric softener because I don't put a lot of my clothes in the dryer.  I was thinking if I made sure that I always did an extra rinse...it would be okay.

  • I don't CD but I would think the residue from fabric softner (especially liquid) would wreak havok on the absorption more than any potential detergent issues.

I use Allen's Naturally on the diapers and Seventh Generation for everything else. I don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets on anything.
  • I use Allen's for diapers and Purex F & C for everything else.  I would think the residue from a liquid fabric softener would not be good for the diapers, but I've always used dryers sheets when drying everything but diapers, and I have not had any repelling issues at all.

    :-)

  • Thanks everyone.  I will figure out how to cut out the liquid softener.  I will deal I suppose.  I was thinking what people who CD in places like NYC do with washers/dryers they have to share...what kind of problems do they have?

  • Charlie's did not do well for us--I have a FL with a whole-house water softener, but what I really couldn't stand about Charlie's was how it solidified into a giant clump in the little muslin bag it came in! I had to chisel some off the chunk every time I washed (but I also felt it didn't wash well for us--everything was very stiff). I am now using Country Save--it's better, definitely, and we use it for everything, but if you check out the diaper chatter board on diaperswappers, everyone SWEARS by good ol' regular Tide. That's what I'm going to use when my box of Country Save runs out. I just love something I can find at HEB! And the folks on diaperswappers are hard-core CD fanatics--I trust their opinion on these things.

    Ditto.
