Those that have built their homes or plan to build

Show me your favorite floor plans. We are seriously considering building. We looked at land today and talked with the contractor. Now we are looking at floor plans and they all start to look the same. We are thinking around 2400 square foot with the basement being unfinished for now with the option to finish it off and gain more square footage. Tell me your tips of building and what you recommend or don't! We own our home but did not build it.

    We had to pick from floor plans that were approved in our *village* (read: town) and what the HOA mandated. Long story but we had about 13 to pick from.

    The only thing I want to change right now is the kitchen- I wish we went more high end with the appliances. Don't get me wrong I <3 my kitchen and plant to put in high end appliances in the near future.

    I can tell you what to run like hell from.  Or tell you to start building, then have that fall apart, then find a brand new custom-home already move in ready with your name all over it.

    I remember that whole saga! It seems exciting to build but I wouldn't mind finding a brand new home and buying that either if we like it! Land is getting crazy expensive here!

    We really got lucky.  The house we're in is SO much better than the one we were building, in a much better neighborhood.
