Transition to crib...worst night ever :)

I don't know if it was just the transition to the crib, or a combination of that and gas, but we were up every 1/2 hour last night with DS.  Seriously...it was awful.  One of us would spend 30 minutes rocking him to sleep then he would wake up 15 minutes later and then the other one of us would switch and start the process over again.  Ugh.  Anyone else have this much trouble with the transition?  Any tips?  We do swaddle him...though as he is getting bigger he seems to fight it more and more.  I think we'll try some new swaddling techniques tonight.

  • I have been putting my ds in his crib for all naps for a couple of weeks so its not a strange place to him. Maybe it felt big for him thats why he couldnt get into a deep sleep. Maybe he just didnt feel good cause of gas or what not. I would try naps first and see how that goes.

  • We moved our DS from our bed to his bassinet around 2 months and had the same problem at first.  Eventually I figured out that his crying wasn't really that serious or distressed because he would stop crying immediately when I picked him up and fall right asleep (normally if he's really upset it takes him a while to calm down after I pick him up).  So the next night I decided I wasn't going to pick him up right away when he cried.  I sat right by his side rubbing his tummy and comforting him the whole time, just letting him know I was there, but didn't pick him up.  I was worried it wouldn't work, but he never got into the really hysterical crying, just more of the angry crying. After a few minutes he just stopped crying, sucked on his pacifier and fell asleep.  That night he slept awesome and he's been a great sleeper ever since.

  • I am starting to lay him down in his crib for naps. It doesnt last very long. But each time he does last a little longer. I still co-sleep with him at night and will do that until he sleeps longer without needing to eat. But its a good starting point. Good luck!

I do remember however that once DS1 got used to his crib at night, we started getting the BEST sleep we had since bringing him home. I look forward to that day again.
