Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I need a crash course in weaning and feeding after 12 mo

Do u just switch to whole milk bottles at one year? (Gradually, of course.) When do you stop bottles and just do a sippy? Do they drink the same amount of milk from a sippy as they did from a bottle throughout the day? When is a good age to stop additional feedings after dinner? When is it no longer 5 bottles a day plus breakfast, lunch and dinner and just breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a sippy cup? I feel like an idiot, like this big 12 no milestone is coming so fast and I have no idea what to expect after it.

Re: I need a crash course in weaning and feeding after 12 mo

  • We transitioned to a sippy completely except the nighttime bottle at 11 months.  She fussed for the first day and when she realized we weren't giving in she just took her sippy and drank it.  No big deal.  She does drink the same amount as she was of formula.  We were doing 4 6 oz bottles a day.

And we did the switch to milk over 3 weeks.

Week 1 4 oz formula, 2 oz milk

    Week 2 1/2 and 1/2

Week 3 2 oz formula 4 oz milk

    Done!

  • my son isn't interested in weaning AT.ALL so we are still going strong on that front.  he is down to 3 sessions a day though , morning , before nap time and bedtime.   so far he has hated whole milk but I still over a bit at every meal.  he gets water in his sippy between meals.  he only gets a bottle when I am at work at night and my freezer stash is almost gone so that will be ending soon too.  I am not planning on putting milk in a bottle but if it ends up being the only way he will drink it then I might.

  • First: nothing magical happens at 12 months. They don't turn into pumpkins!

So don't fret! Go with the flow!

BOTTLES: You can gradually remove bottles and replace with a snack and sippy of milk OR you can keep the bottles and just gradually replace FM or BM with whole milk. There is no rule! We phased out bottles slowly until all we had left was teh night time bottle. All other times he got a straw cup of whole milk.

FEEDINGS: At one..they can have breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. They don't need feedings over night or before bed.

AMOUNT : Ask your pedi about his recommend amounts of whole milk. Ours says no less than 8 oz no more than 24 oz a day...we refil his straw  cup at every meal. But he drinks water with snacks.

  • Yes, I switched to whole milk at age 1. I did a gradual switch....mixing about 1/2 formula, half whole milk. She wasn't thrilled with that, and definitely preferred the straight milk (as opposed to the mixture). I didn't take the bottle away until she was used to the milk. I introduced the sippy and that was a fairly easy transition. She continued to get a bottle of milk before bed. When I took the bedtime bottle away, and put that milk in the sippy....she started refusing it.  So therefore, she gave up the bedtime bottle. Since she basically refused it, it wasn't a hard transition.  I'd say this all happened between 12 months and 15 months.
  • We started at 11 months with sippy cups with meals.  She has handled it great.  I feed her in the morning and at night.  She gets a sippy cup with milk in it at lunch and snack.  The sippy cup consists of the same amount of milk the bottle did.  At the moment we do 4 oz of bm and 1 oz of cows milk in each cup.  That is only because I have so much frozen milk that I don't want to waste.  The plan is at one year they will be all cows milk.  MIL messed up yesterday and gave her all cows milk in her cup and she did fine with that too.

  • We went cold turkey with cows milk and still had two nursing sessions.  Stricktly sippy, since he only got a bottle once a day at DC anyway.

I just stopped nursing and he's on whole milk 100% of the time.  I actually am not sure how much milk his sippy holds but I guess he gets about 16 ounces a day.

  • the decision to wean is up to you. I decided to wean after 12 mos, because I was tired of pumping at work and still nursing at night. so I did it gradually over 1 month.

I stopped pumping at work. and then at night I gave her a little formula if she wanted it. eventually we switched to cow's milk cold turkey after I'd used up whatever formula we'd had.

I still do a nighttime bottle before bed. It just gets her tired faster. But during the day for meals, we went straight to sippy cups.

We weren't doing 5 bottles a day at 12 months. She was getting 3 regular meals + snacks. With her meals, she would get milk to drink. Now we do water or milk at meals since she gets dairy in her diet in other ways too.

  • Thanks ladies for all the great responses. I feel a little more in control now that I have a general idea of how this transition is supposed to go. DS is already taking a sippy of water with 3 meals, but I don't think he is as interested in food as most kids his age. He still takes 2 bottles a day and nurses in the morning and before bed. And we've been doing some formula since my supply dropped and we just finished the freezer supply.
