BPP score question

I had my second Biophysical profile yesterday.  For my first one at 33 weeks both babies scored an 8/8.  Yesterday they were both 6/8.  The tech witnessed fetal breathing movement in baby A, but she couldn't keep it going for longer than 20 seconds.  In baby B she didn't witness any fetal breathing movements.  I have to go in Tuesday for a repeat.  Does anyone know why it would be fine one week and not the next?  Could the fact that I didn't eat enough before the test have something to do with it?  I had had a slice of banana bread at about 8 A.M. and my test was at 1:15.  I didn't plan on not eating beforehand, but I ended up napping for too long and didn't have time to eat.  So, my question is did anyone else experience this and everything turned out okay?

Re: BPP score question

  • I can only tell you about my experience as I am no expert.  I have been getting a BPP twice every week since 24 weeks and since that time they have always got 8/8 but since I have had so many I was able to ask a few questions.  The sonographer told me each baby is allowed 30 minutes for their "tests".  They have to have practice breath for atleast 30 seconds for it to count.    My first BPP was at 24 weeks and the sonographer also told me that they were very surprised they were doing this...how far along are you?  This could have something to do with it.  I have also read on other twin website forums where some babies never got the points for practice breathing and are fine.  I don't know why this would change from week to week but sometimes they really have to wake one of my babies up for him to pass everything.

I would try to worry as I have found that the doctors will let you know if you need to be concerned about something.

Nevermind this part.. I just saw how far along you were.

  • So your BPP's last for one hour (30 min per baby)?  She only gave me 30 minutes for both.

  • We had a problem like this on Wednesday.  Baby B only scored a 2/8.  So, they sent us over to labor and delivery for more monitoring.  Once we got over there, they hooked me up to the monitors and watched thier hearts and movement that way.  Everything was fine.  She explained to me, they have 30 min each to "perform,"  like you at the doctor's office, they only tried for 30 min total.  I wouldn't worry, if your doctor wasn't comfortable with what was seen, they would have sent you for further screening.  Good luck to you!

They told me they would allow for 30 minutes for each baby...so if they do everything right away I am done in 15 minutes but it could last up to 1 hour if needed.
