Buying for the baby instead of yourself?

Does anyone else feel they don't ever buy themselves anything anymore?  We have "X" amt set aside each month for clothes and shopping and every month I'm always buying something we need for DS or something that I stumble upon that I can't resist.  I almost never buy anything for myself.  Does anyone else feel this way?

***I wanted to add that for my birthday my mom took me shopping and she went overboard - bought me tons of clothes and said to me, "I know how it is...once you have a child you neglect getting things for yourself."  It was so sweet because, to this day, my mom would rather get stuff for me (and her other children) than for herself.  I'm wondering if this is always how it's going to be.  :)

Re: Buying for the baby instead of yourself?

  • Yes, I do that.  Jakob and Layna always have nice new (well, bought off ebay) clothes and DH and I never have anything to wear :)

  • I totally do this! Last weekend I went to Gap and did not allow myself to enter baby gap, but instead only got what I needed for MYSELF. I just have to force myself not to even look, or I will walk out with all baby clothes, but not the much needed new jeans for myself.
  • Yep...same here.  No new clothes for me ever.  Occasionally I do pick up something for DH when I'm shopping for DD.

  • I was never really a shopper at all. I'm not a clothes horse. I buy stuff for myself maybe MAYBE once a year.

Turns out I'm a maniac when it comes to DD. I have not yet once been able to go to the store for baby stuff we NEED and come out without also getting something I WANT her to have. New clothes. New toys. New gadgets. I'm weak.

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Embarrassed I just spent $99 at Janie and Jack on their friends and family sale. G has more 6-12 month clothes than she can wear. I did buy all 12-18 and 18-24 month clothes though, so it's not too bad right? However, I have lost 15 lbs and really need some new jeans that don't sag of my booty....maybe next paycheck.
  • I NEVER buy myself anything. I am always buying ds and now dd to be stuff all of the time. It makes me happy to do that though. I could care less about being in style, it is all about my kids now.

  • I recently finally bought some stuff for myself. For the first time since DD was born, with the exception of nursing stuff and swimsuits. And you know what? I am so glad I did!
  • I do that too.  But sometimes, I try to find something for myself, and just don't like anything or I'm too lazy to really look.  I told DH that for my birthday this year, I just want a shopping spree so I can buy clothes/shoes guilt-free.

You have one sweet momma!  My mom is super generous, but most of the stuff she buys us is Ethan related lately.  It still saves us from having to buy it though.

I absolutely do the same thing.

It's more fun for me now to buy cute things for him.

I bought myself a one-piece bathing suit out of necessity (no one needs to see my PP stomach this summer) and it was the first thing in FOREVER.

Of course when I went, I also bought him about 10 things. Oh well :)

  • I can't remember the last time I bought something for myself.  The other day I was walking through dillards with 2 blouses in my hand for myself but quickly put them down after finding several adorable items for LO...the cute stuff for him just get me every.single.time!
  • I'm always buying stuff for DS, and with a new LO on the way I'll be buying even more stuff for someone other than myself.

  • Before DS, I used to buy new clothes and shoes on a regular basis.  Now, it happens very rarely.  Even when I do buy something for myself these days, something (or a few somethings) for DS always sneak into my purchase.  I can't help myself!

    :-)

  • Always!!!  I have always loved to shop Embarrassed but now I get more excited to shop for DS than for myself.  I also feel guilty for spending $ on myself when I don't really need anything.  DS needs clothes for this summer so I'd rather spend the money on him.  I have gotten much better about my spending habits in general now that we have a baby and are living on one income!

  • It is so about my kids now.  That is all that I do, spend money on them, go places for them, etc.  Funny how excited I can get about a new park, game, program, whatever it might be that would make them happy too.
  • I rarely buy myself something unless it is really on clearance or I absolutely need it. But the kiddos, they get stuff all the time!
