Babies on the Brain

I took a sewing class at Joanns last night

It was great!  I am so glad I did it.  My mother was a professional seamstress/tailor so I have been around sewing my entire life but I never really "learned" how to sew.  I have had a cheapy home machine for about 10 years, but I never used it without my mom there to help me, and most of the time it was easier to just let her take over the project.  So I figured it was time to bite the bullet and "learn".

For anyone interested I took the sewing 101 class.  You bring your own machine (if you don't have one they have ones you can borrow for the class).  The teacher helps you thread it, wind the bobbin and insert the bobbin if you don't know how to do it.  We made a simple pattern free pillowcase.  She also went over (lecture) patterns, notions and basic sewing topics.  In addition she took us on a tour of the store and showed us all the different kinds of fabrics and explained when/why you would use a paticular kind.  It was totally worth the $35 class fee and lasted 2.5 hours.

  • That sounds awesome! I really want to learn to sew much better than I can, so I might look into Joann's classes.

My mom sewed a lot when I was younger, too (though she wasn't a professional at it). She taught me a bunch of things, but now that I have my own machine, I forget it all.

    I'm glad you had fun!

  • That sounds great!

We don't have a joannes around here.  We do however have a local sewing shop or what ever you want to call it that has a wednesday "stitch and bittch"... people sew, knit, crochet, or what ever.  You get to complain or vent all while learning how to work on your individual project.  Oh and it's BYOB too!

  • I need to do something like this.  I have a brand new sewing machine and I'd love to learn how to use it.  It has been in my attic for 2 years now, untouched.
