Can you get viruses on a smartphone?

I got an email to my gmail acct that I *think* is spam, and I can see the first couple of lines when I look in my inbox, and it looks really personal.  Like, not the "Hi got your email..." type that you can tell is written in broken english.  it looks somewhat legit even though i don't recognize the sender's email addy. I waqnt to open it in the web browser on my phone to see what it is, but if it's a virus I definitely don't want to kill my phone! Anyone know about this?  curiosity kills the cat...

  • i'm really computer stupid but i'm going to take a guess here and say it might depend on what kind of phone you have.  for example, i'm pretty sure macs don't get viruses (i could be wrong) so i would guess iphones, as well, don't get viruses.

Well, it is not necessarily that Macs don't get viruses, but not many people target Macs with viruses therefore "Macs don't get viruses." Most viruses are targeted at Windows OS because more people use windows.

Asmartphone can get a virus, I just do not know if many people would write one to target the OS on a smartphone.  Like PP said if it is an Iphone probably not.
