Multiples

For those of you that had help at night....

I have been reading some of these posts, and have noticed that several of you had night nurses a few nights a week at the beginning. How does that work? Does this person do all the feedings, allowing you to sleep for the night? Or are they there as an extra set of hands when you get up for feedings? How did you find them? Online, recommendations? Any information you could give me would be helpful.

Re: For those of you that had help at night....

  • our nurse does all night feedings, as well as washing baby laundry and bottles.  I still get up to pump, but thats 15 min and back to sleep. ours was rec. by someone who'd used her.

    seriously a lifesaver.

  • I used a night nanny when my DH went away on a couple of business trips.  She would come at 11 pm and stay until 7 am.  She would handle all the night feedings/wakings.  I would wake only to pump - although I'd generally check in on the girls to make sure everything was okay.

I found her through a nanny agency.  I liked using an agency because they did the legwork in terms of background checks and finding someone who was experienced with multiples.  But I bet you might be able to find a night nanny through care.com or sittercity or similiar.

Honestly, if I had to do it all again, I would have hired someone to come at least a couple times a week in the beginning.  Not just when DH was away.  The sleep deprivation nearly killed me and it would have been nice to be able to catch up on sleep at least a few nights a week.  It would have totally been worth the expense.

  • Thanks for the input.  We know we want to have some sort of "help" at the beginning....but I just wasn't sure what it involved.  Sounds like you both had great experiences. We will be moving soon, and I am hoping to find someone once we get settled. We also have a toddler and I worry that I will be so sleep deprived that I will be putting her in front of Sesame Street 24/7 (which I don't want to do....although she might love it. She can't get enough Elmo).

    Thanks again Ladies!
