We have two. An armpit one and a rectal one. The rectal one came in a kit and has a short tip so ya don't stick it in too far.
I think both came from Target. The brand is American Red Cross, they are grey and white and you can find them at a bunch of stores.
underarm
rectal
We use the armpit one a lot but have used the rectal one when DD's temp was really high and we called the pedi about it. Usually a pedi will tell you to take the temp rectally. If you take it by armpit or ear you have to add a degree to equal a rectal temp which I found was true.
We generally use a Vick's rectal one and I really like it--short so you know how far to stick it in and it's quick. We also have a armpit/oral one that has multiple tips that go in the dishwasher which I thought would be great if we have multiple sickos in the house.

***Twin fraternal girls born at 35w6d in 12/2008***
We have the rectal one that can also be used in the mouth (but it's hard to do since it takes awhile to read the temp and the babies squirm)--the rectal came in handy when they were newborns/first few months.
We recently bought the pacifier thermometer (think its Red Cross)--the girls love their pacis so this is an easy disguise for taking temps.
We have one that you can take the temperature from the ear, I think it's the brand is something with "summer" in it...it's awesome as it only takes a few seconds it's green when they do not have a fever and is red when they do and records the last temp taken
