I just can't think of something GREAT for my BFF. There's a bunch of little things, but I can't think of one really awesome thing. So what's your favorite gift to give? (P.S. this is re: baby showers)
I like to compile a first aid kit. I include a thermometer, infant Tylenol, infant Ibuprofen, neosporin, diaper rash cream, teething gel, and Pediacare gentle vapors plug ins (if I can find them) and nail clippers. I place it all inside a tote of some sort and write a little note that I hope she never has to use any of it!
NBR - I do the same for teens going off to college.
I'm a big fan of the diaper cake. Never made one, but I got two and they were really cute.
My favorite gift was one I always give, but not until after the baby is born. Make dinner, take it over, visit, clean it up, leave the leftovers. I accidentally started a tradition, as the friend I did this for now does it to all of her new mother friends. It's nice to have company, not have to cook and get to have a stress free visit!

I like to give an item from the gift registry and then include a cute outfit with a gift receipt (I am an easygoing friend--I just want them to feel important but as well I want the mother to be to know that I value her opinion).

Blessing from God, Blessing from God, Blessing from God, Blessing from God.
I love to make diaper cakes! I made 4 last summer for friends/relatives and they were huge hits. In mine I put diapers obviously, clothes, burp cloths, then add in baby wash, diaper cream, powder, lotion, etc, and then decorate with ribbon, spoons, pacifiers and something cute on top. I've used toys and hats for the toppers.
I'm also a fan of the diaper cake. They always seem to go over really well, and I like making them. I use items that are on their registry to make the cake... diapers, blankets, wash clothes, etc.
I also like doing baskets... find a nice basket (dvd baskets work well for diapers later) and put things related to each other... bath time, feeding, etc.
I usually take something from the registry and personalize it. Buy the bottles she registered for and fill it with her favorite candy. Get the blankets she registered for and fold them like an animal, like they do when you're on a cruise ship.
Or, you could do something just for her and really be her BFF, pedicure!
The favorite thing I received was a gift basket full of little things from my sister in law. Each item had a tag on it explaining how she found it helpful with my nieces and nephews or a little story about how to use it. It was awesome, very personal and made me cry!
My favorite gift to give used to be a bathtub full of miscellaneous bath items - the plastic tub filled with hooded towels, washcloths, baby lotions, creams, etc.
