i had my first nightmare ER visit.
Tuesday night i had to be visit the ER for excruciating upper abdominal pain and back pain (on scale of 1-10 it was 12 and mind you i have a high pain tolerance level) My pain was so bad I couldnt move. I called my OB and he said it didnt sound like pregnancy related. so after a tylenol and one throwing up episode when the pain still didnt subside we decided to go to the ER.
First things first the babys heartbeat was fine. They put me on low dose of morphine for the pain but that didnt help. So they switched me to a higher narcotic, which ofcourse made me groggy and more nauseos. They suspected gallbladder problem but the u/s and blood work came back normal.A slight elevated WBC count but that was dismissed as normal since there was no sign of fever.
After 5 hrs in the ER i was back home. Another 2 incidents of throwing up and hrs later it was asif nothing happened. No pain. No fullness.
They suspect it was a gall bladder spasm. But since the u/s came back normal there is nothing much they can do. The OB said if it were to happen again he would so the same thing-go to the ER. Meanwhile I have been asked to follow a bland, low fat, non greasy diet.
Great, who was it that said second trimester was a breeze?
Re: my visit to ER- possible gall bladder problem
Oh no... that stinks... I hope that is your one and only episode. I think the 2nd tri just brings a whole new set of worries- less about miscarriage, more about 'your' body going wrong...
Good luck with the new diet- that would just kill me- I am all about spicy food, and am not adverse to a bit of grease/fat on occasion!
Ugh, I'm so sorry. Having been through that before, I'm going to give you a piece of advice. Don't go off the low fat diet. I ate a full fat piece of cheese and had an attack. It's not worth it. I was pregnant when all this happened and lost 14 pounds in two weeks.
Did they say they may do surgery? They said once I got into the second trimester it was a good option.
Thanks. I did read about that. I was doing weight watchers before i got pregnant. so it was all about no fat- milk, cheese, everything. Then ofcourse i switched to 2% milk, regular cheese etc. But i think its best to follow a low fat/no fat healthy diet.
The ER drs didnt recommend surgery since nothing was detected in the u/s- no stones or inflammation. The OB said that as far as possible unless it was life threatening - fever, infection etc. he does not recommend surgery. So I am hoping a low fat, non spicy, non greasy diet helps it. No buffalo wings for the next 6 months!!!

Your episode is EXACTLY like what I had when my gallbladder went bad. Excruiating pain in the upper abdomen and back, and it completely resolved after vomiting. I could have written your post, word for word.
I had my gallbladder out at the beginning of February and have felt like a million bucks ever since. No more pain...and I had problems during my pregnancy and horrible attacks afterwards.
I hate that you are having these problems...I was in absolute misery.
ETA-all my tests were normal too...even a HIDA scan...but my surgeon was good enough to listen to me and understand that I had classic gallbladder symptoms and needed surgery. Best decision I've ever made was to have this surgery.
thanks dana. I have paged you on a separate post. Did you do/take anything to reduce your symptoms during pregnancy?
