Talk to me about wet diapers + colds

Will's got a nasty stuffy nose/congestion/little cough right now. No fever and he's playing/acting like he feels just fine. He's so not into eating, nursing, or drinking because he can't breathe. We don't do juice, but I'm about to go get some so he'll drink something.

How may wet diapers a day does he need? And how wet should they be? His all night diaper (7:30-8am) was barely wet. I changed him when he woke up from his nap and that one too was hardly wet at all. Yesterday was very similar as far as wet diapers and eating go. I think he's had maybe half a banana and a few bites of grilled cheese over the past two days :(

Re: Talk to me about wet diapers + colds

  • I think our pedi says one at least every 4 hours. I could be remembering wrong though.

    ETA: This is from the Dr. Sears site

    SIGNS OF ADEQUATE HYDRATION ? if your child has most or all of the following signs, then you can be reasonably sure he is not significantly dehydrated:

    * Moist, shiny mouth from saliva, pools of saliva under tongue or lips
    * Moisture present in eyes, tears dripping out when crying
    * Urinating at least every 4 hours
    * Active, playful, running around tearing up the toy room

    Do you know if it matters how wet the diaper is?

  • I'm not sure about how wet the diapers should be. Here's more helpful info:

    WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION

    SEVERE DEHYDRATION ? seek medical attention if your child shows these signs:

    * Limp, inactive, makes minimal eye contact and not response to your voice or touch. This is the definition of lethargic.
    * Lips chapped, inside of mouth is dry and sticky with no saliva
    * No tears, eyes are dry and sunken in
    * No urination for 12 ? 18 hours
    * Extremely unusual fussiness along with the other symptoms
    * Pale
    * Very fast heartbeat

    Thanks. I guess he's adequately hydrated then! The number of toys scattered around my living room should've given me a clue ;)

  • I asked when Rhett had his EI in December. The pedi said that since his intake was lower they would expect the diapers to not be as wet. They said any wet diaper counted and they were only looking for a wet diaper every 6 hours. He was older though, 21 months, so I don't know how much of that would be the same.
