Hmm.... His parents are both English teachers so I'm trying to figure it out. Being teachers, I would have thought they would have picked a name that would be easier for teachers to pronounce and figure out

It is biblical. Canaan was the son of Ham, and Cannan was the Promised Land.

Any time I've heard it pronounced in a biblical sense its been pronounced Cane-un.
I am thinking naan...the Indian bread.
If I saw that name of my class roster, I would say cay-naan or cuh-naan

I automatically thought of New Canaan, CT pronounced Kay-nin
This is true, but I think it's because we tend to jack up pronunciations in WV.
I would pronounce the name Kay-nin.
