Question re: Bluebonnets...

Since we're talking about bluebonnets, I have a question...

What are the rattlesnakes like up here in DFW?  I grew up in San Antonio and they were a big problem, especially amongst the bluebonnets, so I only know a few people brave enough to actually get their photo taken in them.  But I've heard that a lot of people do it up here and I'd love to take my kids' pictures - I'm just super worried about the snakes.  Since its not AS hot as South Texas, are rattlesnakes not as prevalent?

Re: Question re: Bluebonnets...

  • I've never heard of anyone coming across a rattlesnake. I'm sure if it were a problem, no one would risk it just for a cute picture. Yikes!

  • I have not personally ever heard of anyone getting attacked by a rattlesnake while having pictures taken in a bunch of bluebonnets.  There was an email circulating about it last year, but I couldn't find any news story to back it up.  I'm sure snakes can be a problem in certain rural areas, but I find it highly unlikely there is a huge population of them waiting around on the side of 121 for babies in cute Spring clothes to attack.

  • I am deathly scared of snakes. Like, I can't even look at pictures of them or on TV.

It's really not an issue, I promise. Unless you are hiking to to middle of someone's private land you really are not going to come across a snake. They hate traffic and such and won't be hanging around.

That being said, I always check the area and throw sticks at the largers clumps of flowers that I can't see through in hopes of scaring away anything that might be waiting :)

  • Out in the boonies of WTexas no way would I go out in to field of bluebonnets for a picture - but I have never heard of anyone coming across any rattlesnakes up here in the urban areas.

Of course I am sure that one could find a rattlesnake if they tried hard enough up here but it think it would be very unlikely.  Most of the snakes I see around here are just little grass snakes - and I still hate them!

  • I grew up in the hill country of TX where bluebonnets grow like crazy.  I have never heard of anyone getting bit by a rattlesnake.  I plan on taking Avery to get her pics taken this year.  It's almost like a family tradition!

  • Yeah, they were definitely around South Texas where its hotter and drier than here.

Mostly the reason I ask is because in just 6 months of living in our house, I already saw two diamond back snakes (killed one and the other slithered off into the creek behind our house) in our yard.  I know there are poisonous snakes out here (Southlake) and I know rattlesnakes like the full sun, which is where the bluebonnets are.
