Running ladies, a couple questions

So I ran the Shamrock'n Relay over the weekend ( a race in Sac, 7.1 miles). I was able to chat w/ my friend through the run, but just didn't think that I had the full 13 in me. There is another half on May 1.  Do you think getting to 13 in 6 weeks is doable? Also, how many days a week do you run? I find that 2 is about my max.

Re: Running ladies, a couple questions

  • I think if you can already do 7 miles, you can do 13 in 6 weeks if you are good about running at least 3x a week.

When I was training for a half marathon, I gave myself around 4-5 months to train for it, but didn't really follow the hal higdon training schedule till 12 weeks before the race.

    When I got pg I was running 4x a week !

How exciting you did the relay !!

  • Yes, I think getting to 13 from 7 in 6 weeks is totally doable.

If you can shoot for running 3 x a week, that would be better. 1 long run and 2 shorter runs is what I would shoot for. let me know if you ever want a running buddy! i'm searching for one!

  • Definitely.

Good for you for being able to talk while running. Man, I need to learn from you. I tried to hold a conversation while running and it is hard.

Congrats to you!!!  I am sure you did AWESOME!

{Putting on my running coach hat} Yes, I think you can totally do American Parkway on May 1 (I am assuming that is the one you are talking about).  The course is pretty flat and straight forward, which means you don't have to add in any hill workouts.  My general training advice is to run 3x a week (with rest days in between) and on the other days, you can do some light cardio or rest.  Ex: Run Tuesday and Thursday, 4-5 miles.  Long runs on the weekend (Saturday or Sunday).  Increase your mileage each week for the long runs until you get to 12 miles.  Then cut back to 6 miles (taper) and then run your race.  Below is a generic training plan.  Of course, you have already completed the 7 miler so you can modify it to fit your time line.

    Week 1: 7 miles

    Week 2: 8

    Week 3: 9

    Week 4: 10

    Week 5: 11

    Week 6: 12

    Week 7: 6

    Week 8: Race day

I definitely will! I usually do most of my running in my neighborhood, but if I venture out, I would love to have a buddy!

Thank you! Yes, I was planning on the American River. I have run that stretch before, so it does not seem that daunting.

Thanks for your tips - I think this seems doable.

    Stay tuned Smile

  • You can totally do it!  Because of time constrictions for me, I only get 2 3 mile runs and 1 long run in a week for my half training.  Good luck!
  • I definitely think you can do it! Good luck on the half!

I run daily for about 8 miles and one long run on Saturday which is between 15 and 25 miles, depending on where I am in my marathon training/ tapering. I just ran the Napa Valley marathon 10 days ago and will run the Oakland marathon on March 28.
