Strawberry shortcake. Anyone have an "easy" recipe?

I usually just buy an angle food cake, fresh strawberries, some frozen strawberries (add sugar and mash up) and then have either whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

  • I don't like angel food cake so I always use the recipe on the Bisquick box and that was always what we knew as strawberry shortcake as kids. It's easy too!

  • I can't offer anything easier than that but I have two options that or not a whole lot harder and really good.  One is just the recipe on the back of the Bisquick box.  The shortcake is along the lines of a biscuit.  It's a nice change if you are not in the mood for something too sweet and it's no harder to make than pancakes.

The other one is to make homemade cream puffs.  It's not that much more work and it's kind of a fun project because it's so different from usual baking.  You add the flour to boiling water and simmer it until it sort of forms a paste.  Then you just glop dollops onto a baking sheet.  They sort of steam and dry out as they bake which makes them puff way up.  When they are cool, you cut them in half--they are hollow on the inside--and fill with strawberries, icecream, whipped cream and even chocolate sauce, if you want.

If you are interested, I will look up a recipe.

  • I have used the Bisquick one too and it was really easy and good.

  • love, love, love the bisquick shortcake recipe.  That's what we always have too.  I'm not a big fan of angel food cake......we make it every year for Christmas (baby jesus would approve of an angel food cake, right!  lol) but that's the only time.....
  • ditto the bisquick!
  • This is my grandma's recipe...

    2 cups flour
    3 t baking powder
    2 T sugar
    1 t salt
    1/3 cup white crisco
    1 cup milk

Mix flour, sugar, salt and baking powder together.  Cut in shortening.  Add milk and stir until JUST mixed, do not over stir.  (should be a little more runny than brownie batter, but not as runny as cake batter...you can add a little more milk if needed)

Bake at 400 for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.  I usually bake it on a pizza pan, but have done it in a cookie sheet with low sides.

Serve with cut up/mashed strawberries and ice cream.

I do have some bisquick, but the cream puffs sound very interesting. Would you Please Please Please send me the recipe?

    Thank you!

  • This is my quick go-to dessert if I need something last minute.  Everyone raves about it!

Buy or make an angel food cake.

Cut up some fresh strawberries and sprinkle with a little sugar.  Let refrigerate for a couple hours.

Make a small box of instant vanilla pudding and then mix it with a small container of Cool Whip.  Also let refrigerate for a couple hours

Top cake with pudding/Cool Whip mixture and strawberries.

    This sounds good too!

  • We usually do it the same way that you do, with the angel food cake.  But, if you want to change it up, what about making a pound cake?  I know Bakerella has an easy and good sour cream pound cake recipe!  That sounds so good right now!
  • I usually use Sara Lee pound cake cut up into cubes. I layer pound cake, whiped cream, and strawberries, repeat the layers. It's easy and do good!
