Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

No menstrual cycle 3 months after a D&C

I had my second d&c on 12/04/09. I did not bleed after and have not gotten my period since. I was given the 5 day supply of Provera and finished taking it a week ago and still have not gotten my period.

My doctor is not giving me a reason for not returning to a normal menstrual cycle (which I have always had in the past and had two weeks after my first d&c). I asked if it could be scar tissue and he said he has never had that happen after a surgery he has performed.

Has anyone had a similar experience and/or know reasons for why my period may not be returning?

I am obviously very frustrated and not too happy my doctor is not explaining why I have not gotten my period.

Re: No menstrual cycle 3 months after a D&C

  • I was told that it normally comes within 8 weeks of the D&C.  Obviously you realize you are way past this point.  Maybe try seeing another doctor for a second opinion?

Sorry I can't offer any better advice.

    Good luck.

  • Were you having regular periods before your m/c? You should definitely let you doctor know that you want answers or a solution. If you doctor doesn't respond, maybe it's time for a new one. I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • After my first d&c I didn't get my period until I took Provera.  I think it can take up to 14 days after the last pill for your period to start.  There are other things they can try if Provera doesn't work.

  • I'm so sorry to hear your story.  Your story sounds a lot like mine.  I've had 2 miscarriages and after the second miscarriage, I did not get my period back either.  They checked and found out that there was retained tissue.  I would first confirm whether that is the case for you.  They went back and did a second D&C.  More time passed and I still didn't get my period.  The doctors tried Provera and that didn't work and tested for everything under the sun.  They told me it was possibly menapause (it wasn't) or stress.

I kept asking about scar tissue and my doctor said she had never seen a case and it was unlikely.  I kept insisting and finally got the necessary tests done and sure enough, my uterus was covered in scar tissue.  I had an SHG done first (and was told again that I did not have scar tissue).  I finally insisted on a hysteroscopy and that is how I was diagnosed. This is Asherman's Syndrome.  There is a great site called ashermans.org that has really helped me through everything.  I really hope this isn't the case for you, but it doesn't hurt to check out the site.  They will give you great information on getting diagnosed which is half the battle.

The good news is that there are a handful of really talented doctors that can treat this

  • Monkey2007,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I too asked my doctor about scar tissue and his response was he never had a surgery resulting in scar tissue (hard for me to believe). I made an appointment with another doctor but can't get in for 6 weeks.

How long did it take for them to diagnose you? Were you able to have a successful pregnancy after? Sorry for asking so many questions. We are just feeling so lost and hoping for some answers. Thanks again!

  • Amy,

Asherman's is highly undiagnosed because doctors never believe that they caused this.  And to make it even worse, only an invasive test will diagnose it.  It's occasionally seen on an ultrasound, but mine wasn't.  The ultrasound did show that I had a consistently thin lining which explained why I didn't have a period.  However, many women with Asherman's still have a period, but it is very light, or feel the symptoms of a period and it can be painful.

I can't remember if your doctor checked to make sure you were ovulating, but I would also look into that.

I had my miscarriage in March 2009 and wasn't diagnosed until September 2009.  Everything took forever.  I even went to see a fertility specialist and they didn't believe I had Asherman's either.

Once I was diagnosed, everything went pretty fast.  I went to LA in October to have surgery (completely out of pocket because he was supposed to be one of the best in the world and I didn't trust my doctors and my insurance is an HMO so he was not in network).  I was than on hormone therapy for 2 months followed by a HSG to confirm that the scar tissue was gone and some ultrasounds to check my lining.  I finally got my period 13 days after I finished the hormone therapy and the following month (after my first natural period in over a year) I was given the go ahead to TTC even though my lining was still very thin.

I was shocked to find out that I was pregnant my very first month trying - I'm 40 and part of my uterus had a rare form of Asherman's called "Unstuck Asherman's" where the uterus was scraped so thin, that the lining never grows back.  Luckily the baby implanted in the better part of my uterus and so far things are going well, but I'm still in the first trimester.  My doctor has sent me to a high risk doctor because I am at risk for a lot of complications due to Asherman's, but at this time, she thinks everything looks great.

I wish you the best of luck and feel free to ask me any questions.   I felt really lost for a long time.  It wasn't till I joined the ashermans.org website that I felt hopeful again and to be honest, if it wasn't for those women, I would not be pregnant today.

  • Thank you so much for all of you help. It helps a lot. I talked to the doctor again. They now want me to wait a full month (instead of the 3 he originally told me) to see if I get it before giving me another dosage.

I already made an appointment with another doctor. Bad part is I can't get in until the end of April.

I am glad to hear that things are going well for you! I wish you the best of luck for a healthy pregnancy and of course a happy and healthy baby!  Thanks again!

  • I was finally diagnosed with Asherman's Syndrome last week after going to 3 different doctors. I am lucky to have one of the best surgeons for this in Chicago. He originally said the scarring is too severe to opearte, but found a small opening to the uterus will no scarring.

My surgery is Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed! I am very high risk and on the border of moderate to severe ashermans.

Thank you for all of your input. It was very helpful for me to keep pushing the scar tissue.

Best of luck to you and the new little one on the way!

    Amy
